M husband is very supportive of my efforts to get my degree but I do think sometimes he wishes I wouldn't spend so much time doing "homework". I am an over achiever and I spend more time than I probably should on my studies. But he knows there is an end in site and has agreed not to divorce me within that time frame .....im kidding!

Mine has no clue why I have a need to get my degree. Other than that she has been very supportive of it and the out of pocket cost. I think she is getting more excited now I'm taking my last class with AJU (they let me start early). Now I just need to tell her I just got accepted to Lamar University for their BSGS program which I plan to start the end of 2011 after I do a few more semesters with AJU. She has no idea I plan on doing a master’s program either..lol.

So we all know about this before she does? I hope she doesn't lurk on this board and bust you!

    To answer my own questions:

My wife was skeptical at first. With a doctorate degree, there are no guarantees that it will earn income to repay you for your investment. However, my wife is on board and supports me because she believes in me. She's awesome! My studies take away very little of our time together because I am able to work mostly at times that she is busy.

Hey Michael, since you refer to it as an investment, what do you think you'll do with it so that you'll have some sort of return? In other words, what will you do with a doctorate that you cannot do now without it?

Thanks for asking, Steve. I'd be happy to share my reasoning. Maybe you, or someone else, can tell me if it's faulty.

    1. As a teacher, I get a small, automatic pay raise for the doctorate. However, it's not enough money to motivate me, when considered by itself.
    2. A doctorate degree opens up more opportunities for promotion to principal.
    3. I plan to attempt to do adjunct work in addition to my regular teaching job. Hopefully, a doctorate will help me get an adjunct job; it's tough out there.
    4. After many years of experience, my current job has become so easy that it allows me the time to invest into continuing my education. Even though I love my current job, I go nuts if I'm not moving forward with something.
    5. I love doing research and academic writing. (I'm sick, I know)

So I'm not really considering it as an investment where I'll expect to earn a high ROI. However, it's something I want to do and expect that it should at least pay for itself eventually. I'm aware that there are no guarantees even on that hope.

Well she knows now! I left the forum screen up and of course she reads this. What are the freaking chances of that? Well she was ok with it any how, but what the heck of all the times, she reads this post!!!!

No, to me those seemed like reasonable reasons. And you did choose somewhere that's inexpensive by American standards.
