    Thanks for the info, Ted.

My question referred specifically to the program you pointed out at South Bank.

I didn't find any info on DL at their site, although there were 2 Masters'I found very intereting: One in European Policymaking and the other one in International Development.

Can you tell me which program is offered at a distance at this university?

    Snigger ;-)

It's more a courtesy to the department in question than anything else. A way of getting off on the right foot.

If a department has a degree or programme that's labelled explicitly as DL or external, you've got no problems. But the fact is that quite a lot of departments that don't explicitly use the DL label are amenable to taking on part-time research students who are based at some considerable distance from the university. Generally speaking, if you say that you're interested in part-time study, you show that you're speaking their language and you can start negotiating about residencies and cooperative supervision nearer home on amicable terms.

The degree to which the use of "DL" can provoke irritation can be seen fairly clearly from the first paragraph of Cambridge's regulations for part-time research degrees! http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/admissions/pt/bgs_pt_research_degrees.pdf
