Touro MBA students with non-business bachelor's...

This time I have question about preparatory courses for those who have non-business related BA/BS degrees and are or were enrolled in the MBA program.

As some of you know, I recently enrolled in the program and yesterday I registered for my second and final preparatory course- MGT503, Advanced Entreprenuership. My first prep course was BUS401, International Business.

Although I have a BA in Liberal Studies, at least 21 of those credits are business related. I'm puzzled at how they concluded I needed an Advanced Entreprenuership course! How can an advanced course in anything be considered a prep course? I would've thought a course in managerial accounting or something along those lines would have been more appropriate (not that I want more quantitative stuff  ). I'm hoping they're not simply making me take the second prep course just to collect the additional $1200 tuition. Surely there are more "fundamental" courses that might be more suitable as prep courses for an MBA.

Well, here are my questions: How do they go about determining what prep courses you need? And what prep courses did you have to take?

    MGT 503 - required?? It's an elective

See Touro University for these requirements: (It's about half-way down.)

    "Degree Requirements
General Preparatory Courses - 8 Credits
    ( for non-business related undergraduates only )

    BUS 303 - Business Communications 4 CREDITS
    BUS 401 - International Business 4 CREDITS"

I don't know where you got the idea that MGT 503 is required. It has been an elective since I started my MBA two years ago. Incidentally, I was also a non-business B.S. student. I was required to complete BUS 303, BUS 401, and BUS 508 as prerequisistes for the program. It appears that BUS 508 is now a core class.

The degree plan I recieved form Touro via email specifically calls for it. That's where the "idea" came from. I didn't have to take BUS303 since I already had credit for a course in managerial communications.

What, did you think I just pulled my question out of thin air?

And thanks for the link to their website although I'm already quite familiar with it.

When my undergraduate transcript was reviewed I was informed that I had no suitable credit for BUS 401 - International Business. This was the only prerequisite I was required to take for the MBA.

I spoke with Carly today at Touro regarding the same thing. It appears that even although my degree is in business (Accounting Major) I will also have to take a prep course. She hasn't received my transcripts yet, so she isn't 100% sure which one(s) I will have to take.

I had the opposite experience. I was not required to take any preparatory classes; however I had quite a few undergraduate business, marketing, and management classes.

I don't know how successful you would be but since you are already in the program you could try to challenge them about taking the course. You would be surprised what colleges will do for extra money. I have challened colleges in the past (in the appropriate way) and they have changed their mind.

(i.e. COSC stated that my wife did not have enough Upper Level credits and they overlooked 2 classes that were in the 400 level so we challenged them and they accepted them.) (i.e. I applied to Liberty University's Counseling program and they said I needed one Psychology prereq. however I had a Human Behavior class that was listed as a Business class. Now the college I went to, list the class at BUS 350 or PSY 350 but on my transcript it was listed as BUS 350. So I agrued my point and they accepted it.)

So this is just a thought, look over all of those undergraduate business courses and see if you have a course on there that would have the same learning outcomes as the class they are asking you to take and plead your case. Good Luck!!

    prep courses at Touro

When I had enrolled in TUI (it was a last minute thing in December 2002), I enrolled in some core classes at tame time as TUI was not sure if I needed these prep courses.

Later I was told that since I had a none Business related background I need to take two prep courses (BUS303 and BUS501).

I actually emailed them recently asking if I could be waived from those courses based on the grades I am getting in the currently enrolled core courses.

The reply I recieved back was that no, it cannot be waived and I have to take them as it is a part of the overall plan.

As a result, I have decided to enroll in them for the spring 03 term.

However, I have a question. What is the level of difficulty of these two prep courses. The reason I am asking is to find out if I can do 3 courses this upcoming session (BUS303, BUS401 and MGT501 i.e two prep courses and 1 core course at the same time).

I would like a feedback from anybody who has gone through a similar situation at TUI or has taken these courses.

    thanks

    4Q,
Yep-- your right there are more fundemental prep courses than Advanced Entreprenureship for non business majors seeking MBA's. You need to walk right up to that gift horse and slap him right in the chops and demand your fair share of accounting classes!!!

    Re: prep courses at Touro

    Hey Jarin!

I hope your pursuit of an MBA is coming along nicely for you. Taking three courses at Touro will task you - be prepared to spend at least three hours a night to fulfill the requirements. I was required to take BUS 401 as a prerequisite for my MBA program - I didn't find it difficult, mainly monotonous since international business is not really my field of interest. I learned alot from the course, however, to help broaden my respect for the international business community (which is all the course is intended to do).

    Hope this helps!
