There is probably no substance in history that has ever been studied more carefully, thoroughly and frequently than aspartame. Given the hysteria about it over the internet, one would think that at least one of the dozens and dozens and dozens of studies done would find a link between it and any negative health outcomes at all. However, not only is that not the case, some information (which still as yet needs more research to confirm) suggests that aspartame may even be helpful to people suffering from arthritis.

The only seemingly bad research results come from a study in which aspartame was given to mice in concentrations so high that a human being could not possibly consume an equivalent amount even by chain drinking Diet Pepsi. Those mice got cancer. Duh.

Now, this doesn't mean that aspartame is necessarily entirely harmless, but that if there is any harm to it, the harm is so little that it has escaped detection by massive scientific efforts. Compare that to its main alternative, sugar, which has been confirmed by research and common sense to be strongly correlated in its consumption to the onset of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, arthritis, schizophrenia, osteoporosis, etc ad infinitum.

I haven't seen the documentary in the link you posted, but per the text on the website:

Are you serious? Are they serious? They can't be serious. How in the world can I possibly take seriously something that presents such uninformed drivel as if it were science?

EDIT: I just watched the first five minutes of the documentary and I don't have it in me to listen to any more weasel words, cum hoc or post hoc fallacies. I stopped the video when they threw in a poisoning the well fallacy.

Stevia is a nice alternative. Natural and sweet.

Yes, I am very serious and they are not "weasel words" so be careful what you call "uninformed drivel." Because of my own health issues, I have done a fair amount of research on this subject. Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi has linked aspartame to headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

Hey says it can cause more serious issues such as brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

It's a neurotoxin that happens to taste sweet. I recommend that everyone stop consuming it immediately. I used to drink a lot of Diet Pepsi with nutrisweet (aspartame) and developed at least five of the above symptoms which were progressively getting worse each week. I got off the stuff and they went away. I know of someone who has fibromalgia that was almost certainly caused by excessive aspartame consumption.

Yes, stevia is good. So is Xylitol and Erythritol, both are sugar alcohols that taste quite good and are natural substances to some extent. Erythritol might be the best because it is quite benign on the stomach, lower in calories than sugar, does not cause tooth decay, inhibits the growth of bacteria and it tastes great. In fact, some studies have suggested that it may actually prevent tooth decay to some extent. (I can't remember where I read that, but I will try to find it if anyone wants to see it) It's not as low in caloric content as aspartame, but it's not dangerous according most of the studies I have read. Xylitol tastes great, but it's not quite as sweet and too much of it can have a laxative effect. Sucralose (Splenda) is also a sugar alcohol but it's processing involves chlorine and other chemicals, however, it's not nearly as dangerous as aspartame.

I had this but never really liked the taste. My suggestion - avoid sweets (real or otherwise).

Yes, I rarely use sweeteners, but when I do, I usually add a few drops of agave to a protein shake.

I won't argue the point regarding aspartame itself, since it would probably be better to just leave it to rest, but I just wanted to clarify something...

Weasel word - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, the "drivel" I was referring to was the quote I embedded in my post. If I were to grant that aspartame really was as deadly of a substance as many others believe I wouldn't use that as a way of trying to convey it to the world. Maybe there is something of value to the documentary somewhere within it, but I was so put off with how they insulted my intelligence right out of the gate that I'm not motivated to continue to watch.

Yes, it is a pretty campy video, but there are some very scary concepts there. Plus, there is a fair amount of research to document the danger of aspartame that is not cited in the video such as that I referred to above. The video suggests that there was some payola floating around that made all of the concerns over the substance disappear almost overnight. They have no proof, but circumstantial evidence implies it. Buy into it or not, you can't dismiss the video unless you watch it all the way through.

My wife watched that video a few weeks ago and she is now an avid juicer. She is looking sleek and quite hot already.

I tried it and lasted about 24 hours before I caved in. I'm not surprised because she is much more resolute than I am about eating.
