I will be the first to admit that I cannot stand reality TV, but there are a few that I almost feel guilty for watching. My wife watches a ton of reality and it drives me nuts, but sometimes I feel like I have no room to talk. Here is a short list of reality TV shows that I tend to enjoy: (In no particular order) Storage Wars Pawn Stars Flip This House American Pickers
The problem I have with "reality" TV is that it is poorly defined. Documentary-type shows like Flip This House and Deadliest Catch fall into the category, but then again, so do overly-produced longitudinal game shows like The Bachelor and Temptation Island. Although I feel inclined to say I *hate* "reality" TV, I then have to pause when I realize that Cops is retroactively placed into the same genre, as is Hell's Kitchen :Eyecrazy:
Apparently there are lots of these large "self-storage" facilities that people fill up with all their junk. If they stop paying the storage fees their stuff is subject to seizure. So the facility auctions off the contents. The catch is that you can't go into the storage area and look through the stuff before you bid. If it's a pile of boxes you don't get to look in the boxes, etc. So it's people bidding against each other for the contents of these storage units. To me it's not very compelling but it's obviously popular because it's been on tv for at least a couple of years now.
Yes, there are 4 such shows on now on various channels, including: Storage Wars Storage Hunters Auction Wars Auction Hunters They're fun but also about as real as the WWE...
I'm happy to be able to say that I've never watched a single episode of American Idol or Survivor (is this the original reality tv show?). There are some that just seem sooo stupid. I have a friend who works on the periphery of the tv world and she says that there are just so many channels now and they're all looking for 24/7 programming so that it's not that hard to put together a proposal for a show and get it approved. I'm working on a scipt for "Knitting with the Stars."
I am happy to say the same. Now, I have watched American Pickers, Storage Wars, Pawn Stars, First 48, and Deadliest Catch when stuck in hotels traveling but that is only when I come across it (really it is more of "acceptable background noice"). When I am home I do not watch TV.
I'm all over the place. People look at me crazy when I tell them what I watch but I don't give a damn. Swamp People First 48 Locked up Abroad Deadliest Catch Shark Tank House Hunters Made Lamar and Khloe  Jersey Shore :tongue2: Income Property
I no longer have cable TV and don't watch any of these. If I want to watch TV shows, either I stream them through Netflix or I get a DVD of them, or whatever. For the last year or so the only TV I've really watched has been old sci-fi shows so that my teenage son can catch up with the classics. We started with Lost, went on to Babylon 5, and the old Battlestar Galactica, and right now we've just started Deep Space Nine, which I haven't seen since it was first run on in the '90s. I'm thinking the new Battlestar Galactica will be next, although DS9 had seven seasons, so it will take us a long time to get there. -=Steve=-
So how about combining the weight loss and the scavenger hunt approach. Six 30-something high school graduates. First one to earn an accredited Associate's degree is the winner.
Actually, the first reality show was aired in the mid-70s. One of the premium networks has a series coming out about it. Rather sad what happened to that family after the show ended. Parents divorced, I believe one of the kids committed suicide, another who was openly gay on the show, which caused tension between the parents, died of complications related to HIV/AIDS. The new show stars James Gandolphini and while I don't watch much reality tv, the show looks interesting.
Well its the show that destroyed my ablility to buy items at a low price to resale them. You can't even go to a auction without a bunch of people paying $2,000 for a locker with lawn chairs in them. The days of buying one for nothing are over.
Closest I've seen to that was a couple of years back. Tommy Lee (Motley Crue, & Pam Anderson's ex) enrolled in college and the "reality show" chronicled his first semester. As I remember, Tommy passed some subjects - had a hottie tutor in one - and failed chemistry. Me? I never liked boot-off-one-a-week shows - Idol etc. I DO thank Idol for giving us Jennifer Hudson, though! I'm down to 2 or 3 channels and the best shows I see on TV (aside from Desperate Housewives) are old 30s and 40s black-and-white movies. I saw some of the later ones when they were new! i DO have a rather nice collection of DVDs - travelogues, edu-tainment (e.g. Yiddish World, Native American Architects, 4-vol. History of Chicago etc) concerts -Jazz, flamenco, blues - some rock, etc. - almost NO movies. Johann
OK, someone needs to give me some help. A couple of the waifs forced me to watch "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" followed by"16 and Pregnant." All I can say is that I had NO IDEA that reality tv had sunk that low. Help! Tell me it's not true!
