I'd like every high school senior in the country to learn about The U.S. Department of Labor Home Page
The department of labor is the holder of truth in this question. A good read is called the (free) Occupational Handbook. Wanna know what you'll earn? See what everyone else earned last year. It's a good indicator.
So, while it's possible....hell, anything is possible, the idea that this young man will be someone's employee and bring in anything over $40k with a BA in psychology is laughable. *hey we get it all the time in culinary arts too- they all want to be big chefs on Food Network, but they're going to be making peeled potatoes and minimum wage for a lonnnggg time.

FWIW, psychology is the.....drum roll.....most common undergrad major in the country. Nuff said.

    Dream bustin,

One problem with this country, and perhaps others, is that a lot of people want to start out at the top, some even feel entitled to do so. What a huge huge disappointment when they are told, in effect, to go back and wait in line, at the end of the line. A huge ego-breaker. But reality is always more uncomfortable than an inflated opinion of ourselves.

You mean I can't call myself a Multidisciplinary Studarian? Crap. I was totally looking forward to that.

Hey, I have a psychology undergrad and I make more than that... :p (if you overlook the fact that I already had my job and buttload of experience prior to actually getting my degree... )

Yep, and all it really does (as I've said a few times before) is prep you to be a well educated fry cook, or give you the opportunities to do just about all the same jobs that you could get without a degree at all. Masters and above is where the jobs are. (After certification and licensing... And most of the degrees required for licensing at the master's level are twice the credits for a 'regular' masters.)

I think he meant to move the decimal one point to the left in his potential earnings.

north Charleston PD pays less than Charleston PD so he'll be getting less than 40k a year.

FWIW - Using PayScale - Salary Comparison, Salary Survey, Search Wages, I punched in psychologist with only a Bachelor's from Charleston Southern, and zero years experience. The resulting graph shows an average salary of $39,908. The 75th percentile in Charleston is about $48,000 and the 100th is about $57,000.

So of course I tried the same parameters but changed the job to "stripper/exotic dancer". Average: $21,722, 100th percentile $43,633.

So here's the answer: become a 100th percentile psycholgist by day and stripper by night, and the total is just over $100,000.

FWIW, I am at the 100th percentile according to this site, when I know for a fact that I am making $5-10 less than many of my peers.

I don't trust those sites (see previous comment) but even still, I think it's normal to think everyone else is making more $$ than you.

This guy thinks he's going to walk into a job at 100k, which is the problem. It's possible to build a good career, a business, a practice, etc and work toward that salary...but I wonder why he thinks that he'll earn that as a new employee? (a serious question) Really, this is the internet age, I can find out anything about any career in under 5 minutes - there's no excuse for ignorance, especially since it's been building over the course of 120 credits....that's a REAL slow learning curve.

Highly unlikely. In addition to the fact, that he would not be able to practice as a psychologist with just a BA, the salary figures do not add up. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for clinical, counseling and school psychologists in North Charleston is $29.08/hr. ($60486/year) (May 2009 figures).
