I really don't know anything about this stuff. What is the rationale behind the ban? Is it fear that a LGBT person who is biologically male (for example) might use a ladies bathroom and rape the ladies or something? Here in California, many companies and restaurants put up signs saying they are LGBT friendly outside of the bathrooms. They have been getting positive feed back from customers. I suppose it might make some ladies feel awkward though.

I am in California though. Most of us Californians have a "live and let live" attitude.

In the places in Northern Europe I've visited, the bathroom stalls are enclosed, like little closets. Complete privacy behind a locked door. While they still designate men's and women's bathrooms, there doesn't seem to be a real need for it.

I'm sure putting in stalls like this would crush this problem.

Oh, and I don't think a law about who uses what bathroom is going to stop would-be rapists, regardless of what they wear or what sex they declare. Laws like that are about discrimination, plainly.

So it would seem from the movies, but one might consider Proposition 8 to be fairly recent evidence to the contrary.

It's because we live in a world where there unfortunately are some filthy pedophile predators who would salivate at the chance to go into a bathroom of the opposite sex and scope out some little girls (or big girls) doing what they do in bathrooms to fulfill their sick, perverted sexual fantasies.

I'm really scratching my head over this one. Do we now live in a world where some people can't see how creating unisex bathrooms would create a big opportunity for sexual predators? An opportunity for some truly sick, twisted people to do some nasty things to others? I don't see it as an anti-LGBT bill so much as it is an anti-predator bill. I would think that liberals would understand this since they are all about safe spaces.

    Bullshit.

It blows my mind that people would be ok with this. There are a hundred/thousands of videos online where dudes walk around with cameras on their shoes filming up chicks dresses at malls. It’s so bad my local mall has a sign up advising ladies to be careful. Could you imagine a group of teen boys just going around the bathroom your wife is in? What about the gym? My gym has no stalls and open showers, cool I can now go in there and hangout. Have we all lost our minds? Crap this is sad.

Hell, yes. My son is transgender and forcing him to use the ladies room would accomplish nothing but putting his life in danger. This kind of state-sanctioned discrimination does nothing but tell those who hate that it's OK.

    To hell with these bigots.

Besides your lack of manners, do you have any proof that this is a societal problem? That there's some sort of raping rage happening in bathrooms across America? And how, exactly, does this kind of law prevent that kind of crime? "Well, I was going to go in there and violate an occupant, but the law says I can't go in, so I went bowling instead." Something like that?

You seem to know a lot about those voyeur videos. J/K Are you saying this is a rampant problem of epidemic proportions or something? Do you think all LGBT people walk around with little cameras on their shoes? I am guessing where you live you probably have never even come across an LGBT person. Are you saying hordes of LGBT people are just lying in wait to get in to a women's bathroom? Come on now.

Most of the bathrooms here in CA located in businesses and restaurants are generic bathrooms. In other words, a single terlet and a single sink. A man or woman goes in one at a time, and locks the door. No problems. I would imagine as most states become more LGBT friendly, they will probably install similar bathrooms to avoid problems. I would imagine they way things are, most LGBT people probably just avoid public restrooms in order to avoid all of the hassles involved.

wow we made the news! In some ways, NC is very progressive (specifically if you live near Raleigh or Charlotte) but the rest of the state....well, let's just say they're still fighting the Civil War down here.

EDIT to add- rape is already against the law. Just sayin.

Rich, I am no longer providing any references, links, proof or any other supporting documentation on this forum when you ask for it. The last time I provided a link when you asked, you turned around and trashed the link. No more. You are a big boy, and I suspect you have the ability to do a basic internet search yourself. Besides, this is a discussion forum. I'm not turning in an academic paper for you to grade.

It isn't just an issue of rape. There are other forms of sexual predation, like the creep-wads who get sexual thrills from watching others naked or taking care of their bathroom business. Just ask TV sportscaster, Erin Andrews, and she'll tell you all about it. If you had a daughter (who knows -- maybe you do), would you seriously be okay knowing that any pervert could simply announce that he feels like a woman today, go into the lady's bathroom, and then spy on your daughter through a crack in the bathroom stall while getting himself off? I'm sorry to be so graphic, but apparently I have to practically spell it out for some.

I honestly believe that many have, indeed, lost their minds with this stuff. Many have become so open-minded about some things that their brains are falling out.

The law targets a problem that doesn't exist and potentially creates more problems. Currently, there isn't a widespread problem of perverts dressing up like women to enter women's restrooms. There are probably more perverts in the NC legislature than there are perverts dressing up as women just to use the women's restroom. However, there is the very real possibility that transgender women will be harassed and assaulted when using men's restrooms because hate and sexual crimes against transgender individuals are a regular occurrence. As a woman, I have no fear of men exploiting the allowance of transgender women to use women's restrooms. There are already laws that protect people in places where they have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

A much more immediate problem that governments would be addressing, if they really cared about safety rather than punishing the LGBT community, is date rape and sexual assaults on college campuses. If I had children, I would have a greater fear of them being molested by a teacher of any gender, clergy member, family member, family friend, or male associate. Being sexually victimized by a stranger is much less likely than being sexually victimized by someone you know. Your little girl or boy is much more likely to be touched by Uncle Frank than some stranger pretending to be a transgender woman.

And how did that turn out? When it comes to gay marriage, California was a pioneer. And you know what? I haven't seen any marriages between a man and a dog, or other such strange things that were predicted.

That's my point: it was approved by a majority of voters and had to be overturned in court.

I'm not arguing with that. I'm just disputing your belief that most Californians are tolerant on this when the initial passage of Proposition 8 is strong evidence to the contrary.

Kind of like there's no rampage of shootings by legal gun owners, yet so many politicians insist on pushing more gun control laws? Do criminals look at "gun free zone" signs and say "I was going to go in there and shoot the place up, but the law says I can't, so I went bowling instead"?

Still fighting the Civil War? Not quite, Jennifer. I grew up in NC. Never owned a slave. Never joined the Confederacy. Never had a "The South is Gonna Rise Again" bumper sticker on my automobile. Was never a member of the hate cult known as the KKK. Have always had great admiration for Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses Grant. And as a male (by birth and identification), I would prefer to take care of my biological business in a "Men's Room."

How old is your son? I can only imagine the difficulties you and your son face in daily life. I think sometimes people who can't relate think that these things are a matter of choosing what gender you want to be on a given day. Not quite that simple. Heck, I guess if things were that simple, conversion therapy would actually work. I wish you and your son the best, I know you face many challenges ahead.

The closest I ever got to NC was Virginia. I was sent there to do some contract work for Aspen U. They put us up in this historic hotel near Colonial Williamsburg, I think it was called The Williamsburg lodge or something. My wife and I went to the Civil War reenactments, and visited the Jamestown settlement as well as Colonial Williamsburg. Then some friends took us to see some old mansions. One of the mansions was owned by a doctor from the Civil war era. They had a sort of mini museum that contained all of his old medical instruments. Damn, it looked like something out of the house of horrors. Bone saws and all kinds of gruesome stuff. The anesthesia of that time seemed to consist of a swig of liquor (if you were lucky), or a piece of bark to bite down on. Geez!

For breakfast, our friends took us to the Cracker Barrel to enjoy the local cuisine. I definitely remember the grits which were tasty, but I can't remember what they came with. Gravy maybe? I noticed the people seemed to be extremely polite. I like the Southern women's drawl. I get a kick when they say my name. They kind of pronounce it "Abnah" instead of Abner.
