Can someone tell me something about Newport University? Is it legit?

They are listed in the "other" (to be read "unaccredited") schools section of Bears' Guide 15th edition (p. 210). If memory serves me, in their day, they were considered one of the better unaccredited California schools. However, it has also been duly noted that nowadays, with the plethora of accredited distance learning doctoral programs, even a good unaccredited doctorate no longer makes sense. At any rate, they do offer bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in business, education, engineering, psychology, and religion, as well as law degrees.

As Ted said not accredited. Anything not regionally or nationally accredited you really should pass on. Not really sure why anyone could see much of anything here based on less than wonderful website. What degree are you looking for?

Was Newport ever a candidate for DETC? I note they dropped their doctoral programs in 2002.

    Cheers,

They've generated a California lawyer or two in the past few years as well as a larger handful of unsuccessful Bar examinees.

Their law school appears to be legitimate though I'd guess that it's smaller than, say, Taft or NWCU or Concord or Oak Brook.

Not exactly cheap at about $5,000 per year but also not wildly out of line. Cheaper than Taft or Concord (both DETC) but more expensive than SCUPS, NWCU or OakBrook (all unaccredited).

If I recall Newport used to advertise that they were ISO 9000 certified (perhaps implying that this was equivalent to accreditation?). I don't see that on their web site today.

Also, in response to a comment above I could not find any mention of engineering courses/degrees.

    Engineering at Newport

Newport historically offered bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in engineering. It seems that they stopped offering such degrees in 2002, although anyone who enrolled in an engineering degree program prior to that date apparently still has the chance to graduate.

They did indeed. It was Newport owner Theron (Ted) Dalton who explained to me, twinkle in eye, that he personally had written the ISO standards for distance education, and, he explained, "If you write the standards for a cement life jacket, and then manufacture cement life jackets to those standards, you get your ISO certification."

Are there any newer thoughts or accreditation news out there on Newport?

They were approved by the BPPVE in California and have entered into voluntary compliance with the Department of Consumer Affairs.

Does anyone know if the BPPVE or, better yet, the CPPVE is going to be revived?

California is running big deficits in its state budget - my guess is that BPPVE will not be funded in the next few years.

DETC doesn't have a candidacy process and designation. They were either an applicant, not an applicant, or were accredited. The first two don't really matter since the last never happened.

DETC doesn't distinguish between applicant schools they do not accredit.

Back in the day, Newport was considered to be "not bad" for a California unaccredited school. Not one of the better ones, though, like CCU and CPU, or many of the state-approved residential schools.

But it wasn't UCC, Southland, Kensington, or PWU, either.

The chiropractor from Texas (or is it Florida?) that now owns PWU (aka California Miramar University) might threaten to sue you if he reads your note. It seems to be a favorite pastime of his. :)
