Article: New Star Trek Series Premieres January 2017

The good: It's a new Star Trek series!

The bad: We don't know anything about it yet, e.g., whether this is in the alternate timeline of the recent movies or the real timeline of the older movies and television shows.

The ugly: It will only be available through "CBS All Access", a service that costs $5.99 per month and is sort of like Hulu or Netflix but which only has CBS shows, none of which would interest me but this and maybe Supergirl.

Overall I'd have been more excited to hear that some superrich fan dropped a few million bucks on the Star Trek Continues guys so they could finish their fantastic work completing the original series at full speed. But so far I'll take this over not this.

For me, paying for a subscription service is a turnoff.

I think that will be true for a lot of people. Diehard fans will be the exception, and CBS may be right that enough of them will shell out for something that says "Star Trek" on it that overall it will be worth it. But if they're going to do that, then this series had better appeal primarily to the ubergeeks rather than the masses. Unfortunately, I have the feeling that if they were going to go with the "Captain Worf" series that Michael Dorn has long pushed, we'd have heard that in the initial announcement.

    I guess we'll see.
