From the business perspective, I think that a P.Mgr and PMP should be enough to show business knowledge. I don't think that a MBA from UoF would help that much but wouldn't hurt either.

That is what I was pointing out. While legally granted permission to issue degrees there is no guarantee another post-secondary institution will recognize the degree for purposes of gaining admission into a higher level academic degree nor that an employer or professional association will automatically accept the degree as meeting their educational requirements for membership. But then no school is forced to recognize the credits earned at another school.

The Canadian Institute of Management (for example) accepts only AUCC-accredited MBA's, DBA/PhD's for their Chartered Manager (F.CIM) designation. Any foreign schools need AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA.

Most provincial flagship universities - as well as McGill, Carleton, Toronto, Lethbridge - are well regarded in the States....among those who are aware of them, that is.

If my own son was admitted to UBC I would encourage him to go.

    Hi Scott,

I thought I would provide additional information from the CIM site:

    "Requirements for Chartered Manager

Master’s Degree in Management or Business Administration, or Doctorate in Management or Business Administration from an institution that is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (www.aucc.ca)

    OR

For international degrees, a graduate (master’s or doctoral level) degree from one or more the following accrediting bodies:
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (www.aacsb.edu)
European Foundation for Management Development (www.efmd.org)
Association of Masters of Business Administration (www.mbaworld.com)"

First off, I had never heard of these guys before, secondly, my international MBA qualifies for formal recognition to apply for the designation of F.CIM.

Thanks to everyone for posting information about this organization, one more thing to add to the resume!

The CIM has been around since the 1940's. I think they were (and still are) the only general management professional association in Canada. Almost all Canadian universities and colleges run their courses. Quite respectable.

    Thanks Scott,

It looks as though I just have to go thru the motions to get my F.CIM, and so once again, this site comes thru for me! I see there is a Chapter in my city as well, too good to be true!

"...in the last decade tuition fees have steadily risen."

THIS is because thee US model has two distinct advantages. First, it is more demand driven. And second, on the consumer side, students are more diligent when they are at least partly responsible for their money invested in their studies - not just their time.

One of profs at the University of Colorado at Boulder, an economic historian, was from Ireland and did her PhD at the University of Western Ontario. Good school, but too often disinterested students there.

THIS perception is also a reality that drove the Blair government to adopt parts of the US model to improve UK higher education, during his last term, if I recall correctly.
