So I accepted a new job this week and will be forced to relocate to the Baltimore area in late June (right after Harvard hands me my new fancy master's degree). Pretty excited about the job but dreading the move. Any tips on where to live ( don't want to be in the city unless its on the harbor)? Things to see? Places to eat? Etc.etc.
I don't know much about the Baltimore area. However, CONGRATS on completing you master's and getting a new job!!!!
Congrats! I heard that Baltimore suburban area are nice (Columbia, Eliot City, and etc). However, Baltimore is rough place to live especially around Johns Hopkins University. Just be careful some counties in Maryland require you to pay labor taxes (yup you have to pay for Federal, State, but also County).
There are some decent places to live in/around Baltimore. We are up north in Aberdeen (not a very good place) but I have an extremely short commute. I have lived in a couple of different counties. Where is your place of work? Are you willing to commute? Do you want to live in an apartment, condo, townhome, or single family home? Buying or renting? Are you married with kids and need good schools? Single and looking for nightlife? Do you want diversity? Let me know, I can help you out a bit. I have traveled around this area quite a bit and have family and friends in other areas. You can PM me if you want. I am from the west coast. I have lived in SoCal, Oregon, Washington, and spent 6 months in Mississippi, and now have been over here in B'more for two years. Luckily for me I am going back home to Washington State next week. My family will join me after the boys finish school in June. I cannot wait to leave this area. There are some very great things about it and of course some crappy things. I won't bad mouth an entire area over some incidents that I have experienced. I think it can be a good vibrant place to live if you choose wisely. Good luck to you! Cory
I don't know anything about that area, but I wish you and your bride the best in your new endeavors. Abner
If you can do the commute, I absolutely loved living in Annapolis. Lots to do, indoors and out, and pretty much equal distance from DC and Baltimore. Also right next to the bay bridge for quick access to the eastern shore.
I've never been to Baltimore and I can only say that I've heard that it's a bit nasty. Still, my experience overall is that every city has it's good and bad parts. I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work well. As for those Orioles, well, one can learn many life lessons from the experience of disappointment.:crying:
