While I do believe police work is a young man's game, there are many people who come into the profession mid-life or even later. There was a recruit hired by my PD about 4 classes ago who was 52 and retired from the Navy, and there were 2 people in my academy class in their 40's.

Bruce is right. Matter of fact there is such a diverse group of agencies in law enforcement that you might be overlooking some possibilities. Take for instance your state Attorney Generals Office. Most of the state AG's offices have several investigative sections that you might be well suited for such as Insurance Fraud, Gaming Enforcement, Medicaid Fraud, High Tech Crime, etc. My point is that there is always a niche part of law enforcement that you could get into and leave the gore behind. You should seriously consider looking into it if you wanted to work in LE.

I have nothing but love for LE and it was never an issue of not being able to deal with things. Matter of fact if I do leave to pursue another career I will serve as a reserve deputy with my local sheriffs office. If you think you are serious about it I would consider some of the above options. Good Luck! :)

I have remembered these comments for the last several months, and I am beginning my MA in Criminal Justice this summer at APU. I decided that while I may never be an LEO, I can still contribute what I do (I.T.) to the field to help work these problems. I also have an interview (as a senior .Net programmer) with the DJJ in South Carolina. Whether I get that gig or not, I'm going to pursue the academics and see where it can lead. Thanks!

Congrats man! I'm glad I was able to help. This board has always helped me through making tough decisions. I'm always (and still) confused about my final career path but the guidance I get here has always been top notch. Again congrats and good luck! :)
