I hope part time works out for you. A MBA plus a cert in a field you are excited about sounds like a good combo. Let us know what you find.

According to both the Edinburgh Business School site, and the Stafford Loans site, Heriot-Watt University students do qualify for Stafford loans.

This was the case during the nine years I did marketing in the US for this program (during which time it became the largest MBA of any kind in the US, bigger, then, than University of Phoenix. The first key factor is that the university has a FICE number (Federal Interagency Commission on Education), which is necessary to qualify for US federal loan programs.

It was (and, I am confident, still is) an excellent program for people who are comfortable with (or tolerant of) the exam approach. Among our 5,000+ students, we had a very few who took and passed all nine required examinations in one week. One was a fortyish VP of a Fortune 500 company who came into our offices on March 31 (the last day to sign up for June exams), bought all 9 courses, and signed up for all 9 exams . . . and, 10 weeks later, took and passed them all. Then we had a housebound disabled man who signed up for and took all nine . . . and failed six. On his second try, six months later, he passed five of the six. And under the university's unusual "compensatory pass" policy, because he came very close on that 9th exam, he was able to use his five compensatory points to get a passing score and, thus, an MBA.

You can use Federal Student loans for Heriot-Watt, however, only for on-campus programs. Current financial aid rules do not allow for federal loans to be used for distance learning programs.

Since I first wrote this I've accumulated a couple more reasons to stay at UNLV for now... I got Ds and Fs in my MBA classes this year, so I have to retake those 4 to fix my GPA before I can consider applying to transfer anywhere. I also receive my health care through the student health center, and there isn't any other graduate program at UNLV that I could easily transfer into. Also, my student status UNLV allows me to work more hours per year at my employer (a related research institute).

So I have decided to just take the minimum 2 classes/semester, block out time after class to do assignments, and just treat it like a sucky part-time evening job.

Thanks again for all the advice!
