    Hello Friends,

I am currently working as entrepreneur and business consultant in Germany.

Before moving to Germany, I have studied Law at the University for 4 years, I completed 80% of the exams (around 200 ECTS) but I did not complete any "formal" degree because I got a top job abroad and I decided to relocate there.

A few years ago I got a Master Degree in Business Administration (90 ECTS) in Cambridge, United Kingdom. I have been admitted because of my previous studies and because of my professional qualifications.

Formally in UK I have no limits: I could apply everywhere (private and public) as my Master Degree fits perfectly into the Bologna Process (Framework 7)... I could even go for a PhD or Doctorate.

Unfortunately in more conservative countries like Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain they have a completely different approach: they do not really consider the EU Framework of my qualification but the formal combination Bachelor + Master.

I was wondering if someone could give me an advice, this situation drives me crazy.

I was thinking about getting a Bachelor Degree (Top Up) in 12-18 months in order to get the "formal qualification" requested in those countries (Bachelor + Master), the main problem is that a BA /BSc "Top Up" included only 60-90 ECTS and not 180 ECTS (as a standard Bachelor Degree in those conservative countries).

I am very frustrated because I formally have 200 ECTS (Law) (Bachelor Level) + 90 ECTS (Business) (Master Level), even more than a 4 years EU Degree...

What would you suggest me in order to solve this problem?

    Thanks!

Would it be possible for you to complete your first degree in law where you originally started? Was that at a UK or European university?

Are you trying to attain another business degree? If so then which degree? If not then which degree?

Your UK MBA is not accepted in Germany as itself or as prerequisite to another degree?

    Hello Guys,

    Thanks for your message!

The MBA is fully recognized in UK as Master Degree (EU Framework 7), I could easily go for a PhD or Doctorate. The main problem is that in some "conservative" countries, in order to take part to "public" competition they only accept 4 years universities studies (which I have), in other words a Bachelor Degree + Master Degree.

I have a friend with the same situation, he sent all papers for an official accreditation and they have recognized the MBA as a simple Postgraduate course (so not really at a Master Level like in UK!!!!).

For this reason, I am trying to find a recognized institution with a Top Up Degree for 180 ECTS or someone with a 60 ECTS who can add to the EU Diploma Supplement the list of all exams I have in Law.

    Any idea?

    Thanks :)

I have ideas about everything but this. ;-)

The expertise in this forum is mostly about U.S. schools but there are some people who might be able to help you. Give those people time to sober up from the weekend and you might get some helpful replies.

Are you interested in U.S. as well as European or other schools?

You still haven't said what degree you're looking for or what you hope that degree will do for you.

I'm working on that. Step by step. Closer and closer.

    Hi

    Thanks for your message.

In UK I can basically do any kind of work (from teaching at the University / work into taxation etc).

In conservative countries like Germany, if they are going to take in consideration my Master Degree as a simple Post Graduate Degree, it will not allow me to take part to public competition (like for example in order to become tax advisor, teach at high school etc).

I would take your existing Law modules that you have done, apply to get a degree from Open University Australia (because they give alot of exemptions if your modules are relevant + work experience)

Something like this - a Degree in Commerce (Business Law)

    https://www.open.edu.au/courses/business/curtin-university-bachelor-of-commerce-business-law--cur-blw-deg-2016

*I'm assuming once you have a full BA/BS degree (from a Non EU country), countries like Germany would look at it as a whole ~ and not be calculative with the ECTS points.

That "public competition" would seem to be the key to comprehending the Steven Conundrum. And I, for one, am taking this as opportunity to learn what I will surely retain until at least Tuesday.

To qualify for certain jobs, Steven needs what will give him a Master's level education as determined in Germany. I think that's what it is. But who in this forum will know what he needs?

    Hello :)

Yes, you completely get the point. I have a TOP UK Master Degree but in Germany it is just considered a standard Post Graduate degree because they expect from me a formal Bachelor + Master and not just a Master... It does not matter if a standard EU Bachelor Degree has 180 ECTS and I have around 200 ECTS in Law.....

Teuton mothers aside, I think that Steven may be a few languages/mindsets apart from most of us here. Were I German then I would probably have understood the OP well enough.

There's a first time for everything.

That leaves the question of what courses or degree you need to improve your educational status from unter to uber. If you know what courses you need then people here can help you. If you don't know what courses you need then you probably need a German source of information.

For one thing, it's not that simple. It sounds like a Bachelor's degree would be just as useful, and quicker to earn if he goes back to complete a first degree in law.

    Hello Guys,

    Thanks for your support.

I only need a formal "Bachelor Degree" with the EU Diploma Supplement stating that I have completed 180 ECTS.

At this point, Germany will immediately recognize my UK Master Degree equal to a German Master Degree (so far my UK Master Degree is just a simple Postgraduate German Degree EVEN if the UK Master Level has exactly the same level (EU Framework) of the German Master Degree....

I am frustrated because I studied even longer than for a traditional 3 years Bachelor (I have 200 ECTS in Law)...

Back to your question, I am just looking for a fast route in order to get the "Bachelor" degree....So it can be from Law to Business, Marketing, Economics, etc.

I am so sorry if I was not able to answer to your question before.

    Thanks.

Steven should be a candidate for The Big Three, no? Maybe he would be a shoo-in for a business degree as is or maybe he would need but a few courses. If such a degree will pass Teutonic muster.

I hope you check any advice you get here with some knowing German advisor. If not then you may waste some time and money on what won't be accepted in Germany.

I thought about that, but since he's apparently taken no undergraduate business courses, and no general electives, the amount of work still to do would be considerable. The only thing along those lines that might fit would be Athabasca's BGS:

    Programs : Athabasca University
