lower level credit

I recently submitted my transcripts from a Community College to Excelsior. They almost accepted all my credits, but all of them as lower level credits. Is this the "normal" procedure?

I also learned CLEP tests are NEVER counted as upper level, which is sad. I have completed a CLEP in German and eventhough I got 12 credit hrs. for it, it's all lower level. Any ideas how I can get upper level credit for German?

    Thanks!

Well, community (or "2-year") colleges generally only offer lower-division coursework. There are occasionally exceptions; I submitted my CC transcript to Ohio Univeristy for an evaluation and they gave me upper-division credit for a discrete math class I had taken at a community college.

If you have specific classes that you think are worthy of upper-division credit, you might try arguing on a case-by-case basis.

As for language credits, take a look at this:

    That is Excelsior's policy.

    Re: Re: lower level credit

It encourages you to consider taking a few upper level Excelsior exams. Plus, a second area of depth means you have to take some upper level courses anyway.

And finally, there are acceditation rationales for never considering the coursework done in a two year college the equal of a Bachelors granting school.
(Whether these "rationales" are convincing enough to this audience - I'm sure it's not!)

"Courses taken at two-year institutions are never considered applicable toward upper-level credit at Excelsior College."
    http://www.excelsior.edu/tec_faqs.htm
"Courses offered at two-year colleges or community colleges will not be considered for upper-level credit."
    http://www.excelsior.edu/pdf/Liberal_Arts_Catalog.pdf

However, one of our members, Nobycane, reports being awarded upper-level credit by Excelsior for 3 capstone independent study courses from a community college.

No, it's proper. The CLEP exams are not designed to measure upper-level knowledge. There are other exams that are.

You can get 4 upper-level credits (16 credits altogether) for the NYU exam http://www2.scps.nyu.edu/dyncon/acfl/gene_prof.html. This would fulfill one of your "depth requirements". (A "depth area" is defined as 15 credits in a single subject, including 3 upper-level.) Anything beyond that, you would have to claim by portfolio http://www.excelsior.edu/exams/xms_opts.htm. Excelsior used to offer 33 credits for the MLA exam http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7536; and they used to offer a "Flexible Assessment" option http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=av93ce%244lk%241%40news.fas.harvard.edu. But now it's not so easy.

I can't discuss Excelsior since I didn't apply there but COSC will give you intermediate credits for community college credit. COSC requires at least 9 credits of the total of 27 "beyond the basic" level classes for classes numbered 200. This leaves you with only 18 upper level credits to finish, or 5 tests (or classes). My 80 current credits filled almost all the lower credits and completed all the intermediate credits needed in full. I just have to finish a few core lower level requirments (I did 9 last week alone) and 5 upper level tests. COSC's handbook states 6 lower for German 1 and 6 intermediate for German 2. Did Excelsior at least give you intermediate credit? I would think you'd need actual classes in German for upper level if you want upper in German as there are no tests I can find.

I'm surprised Excelsior didn't take all your credits and apply them to the total needed (even if only at the lower end). COSC took all my credits from an AAS in nursing, even the nursing credits, which up until now, I could find no liberal arts college would take at all.

The concept "intermediate credit" does not exist at Excelsior. There's only lower-level and upper-level.

Sorry, that should be 12 instead of 15.

    great info!

Thank you all so much! That is some really helpful info for me...I didnt know about the NYU Exams, which is exactly what I was looking for if Excelsior grants upper level credit for it.

Since I am a native German speaker, I do not want to sit in a German class, just to fulfil my upper level requirement....

    Thank you all!
