I have a low gpa in my bachelors degree and a very good rating in my masters. What do you think are my chances in finding an academic position if I finish a PhD in English?

A position in the U.S. or elsewhere? What schools did you attend for your Bachelor and Master degrees? Where would you go for your PhD? What is your research area? Do you do professional networking in your discipline and if so are you good at it?

Steve's questions are all the right ones. The more recent stuff is far more important than the earlier stuff. In fact, employers can well be pleased to see significant improvement, versus a 'boring' 4.0 from kindergarten on.

I don't know my undergraduate GPA -- the school I went to or 3 years did not tell students -- but it wasn't so great, I'm pretty sure . . . but my 4.0 for Master's and for Ph.D. at good schools definitely trumped that.

Thank you so much for the clarification! I am intending to go for my PhD in Australia or the US. I did my BA in my home country (in the middle east) and my MA in a neighboring middle-eastern country.
My research area is English - I will do something between literary theory and creative writing.
    Thanks again for your help.
