    I would be interested in how many people there are in various law enforcement agencies (including CIA, FBI) who hold bogus degrees but have not been caught - they must be sweating profusely every time they read one of these articles, but we all know they are still out there.

    Knowing a bit about the hiring process with Federal LE agencies, I would be VERY surprised if a fake or claimed-but-not-earned degree appeared from their ranks.

    As I mentioned before, there is an extremely tough process to verify degrees in Massachusetts for police officers whose departments accept the "Quinn Bill".

    However, that's administered by the state, and individual police departments can have their own educational incentives (and based on the numbers, that's what West Brookfield appears to have) outside the Quinn Bill.

    Unfortunately, some of these quaint New England towns apparently have the equally quaint view that someone who applies to be a police officer would never lie about their educational background. :eek:

    It almost makes me glad I work in a city, where no one trusts me. :D

    I know, I know, thread necromancy, but an update to this that shows how damaging fake degrees and claiming degrees you don't have can be.

    Former Sergeant Leslie had to repay the town $2,330 for education incentive pay for his fake Master's and non-existent Bachelor's degrees, far less than what he was paid, but still a lot of money for someone freshly unemployed who was making less than $50K to begin with;

    Unfortunately, there is also a tragic ending to this story;

    RIP, Col. Brice.

    Colonel, Light or Full, is a good rank and it looks like he got his 20. Don't know if that helped fill his wallet but it should help his survivors.

    I'm surprised he made rank without a degree.

    He had a bachelor's degree. It was the Masters that was shady.

    Bruce was wrong in post #24? I've now lost all faith in humanity.

    Here's your faith back again, Decimon. I don't see where Bruce was wrong. With all due respect to his memory, the late Sgt. Brice Leslie's bachelor's degree from Worcester State could not be verified (they tried) and his Master's from Shelbourne University, which AFAIK is part of the Romania/Cyprus/Israel UDP scam of some years ago, was not valid. IIRC, a Boston Rabbi was high up in that fake-degree scheme.

    Yes, he was. I've looked up the Bear/Ezell work on documenting that scheme. The rabbi, whose name I couldn't remember or find immediately, divided his time between Boston and two boiler-shops selling degrees over the phone in Bucharest and Jerusalem. Bear and Ezell write that he was making $150,000 a day - around $1 million a week!

    From the first link; The town wished to be reimbursed because Leslie's bachelor's degree from Worcester State College could not be verified, the selectmen said.

    In other words, he didn't have a degree from Worcester State. The school never had a fire where their records were destroyed, they just have no indication he ever received a degree from them.

    Thank you so much for this, Bruce. In my "Paul Harvey" mode, I am always interested in 'the rest of the story.' --John
