I really cannot comment on the s0-called 'ministerial' aspects but one of the largest programmes re Islamic Studies in the Uk is at the theology department at the University of Birmingham. This department also works in collaboration with other departments in the University and they are developing a new PhD programme in Islamic Studies. Go to the University of Birmingham web site, click on 'theology' and you'll get to this new programme. B/ham has a large Islamic community and is doing all sorts of things in this area!

  2. I hadn't seen this one before: AMIR Islamic University.

    A snippet:
    • If AMIR were to be a leader in Islamic Education, for the whole World, then major changes have to be made. Changes that would make it easy, simple and extremely affordable for our Muslim brothers and sisters in any spot of the World to take classes and learn more about Islam, without compromising the quality in delivering the courses. AMIR, therefore, will become an "all on-line" Institute, where a student will be able to register for a class, download the whole curriculum from the Internet, take exams On-line, and set up conferencing sessions with teachers and other students. Details will be posted in our web site: (www.amir-university.org) very soon, insha'Allah.

    For KKA

    Hi Ken,

I was just going through these threads and observed your post. I might be responding decades after the post was made :) but I decided to add my ten cents worth since it might help people for future reference...

Most of the universities mentioned will indeed provide good education in Islamic religion, but, you were interested in a seminary/talib program form a GAAP standard school if I am correct.

Even though I am not a seminary, I do know that such courses are available through DL. The most common course (or collection of courses) for seminaries in Pakistan is called Dars-e-Nizami. This is what the Mullahs usually go for (to build a foundation for further specialization in the four major schools of jurisprudence).

You can consider the Dars-e-Nizami course at Allama Iqbal Open University (the link to the university website was mentioned earlier I think). It will definitely not be fanatical education, but you can expect it to be extremely conservative from the western perspective obviously.

I guess it could possibly give a student, in interdisciplinary/intercultural studies, a deep insight in the education of a reputable Islamic madarsah (not the average "recruitment" hubs).

The link is www.aiou.edu.pk/programs_bachelor.htm I think

    FTI:

Islamic ministrial education is offered at Bachlors level only I believe... I can only assume graduate studies are offered for specialization in the four major schools of jurisprudence. On top of that, I am not aware of a crash-course in dars-e-nizami (it could be possible) so one has to start with the foundation I guess. Try to contact AIOU and see what they say in that regard. I think email is best since you wont have the "Angrezee" problems that way :)

    Cheers! :D
