    Dr. Bear

Thank you very much for your reply. Yes, I actually was looking for opinions. I have taken all of this into consideration and after reading the posts from Gus Sainz and Tom Head am going to probably take the South African or Australian route for my DBA.

I did not mean to inspire such spirited debate although I knew that this crowd could be and is volatile when it comes to certain matters. As you can see by my CV do not endorse unaccredited schools. I merely see SOME value in them for some people.

I was however, impressed by SCUPS, an institution that I had never looked at before. I understand what you are saying regarding the illegal use of the title Dr. in some states and while I do not travel or do business in the states you mentioned I am going to take your advice into consideration.

Congratulations, Rafael! This requires a celebration.

Methinks I’ll put on some Coltrane, pour me some Cognac, and fire up a Romeo y Julieta Churchill. Or should I make that Miles, Armagnac, and a Monte Cristo? Decision, decisions… :D :D :D

Rushmore is not credible at all, if your clients find out what kind of credential do you have it will harm your reputation. If you buy a degree from Rushmore, most likely this school will change name or go to bankrupt in few years. If money is an issue, you should look into a PhD from a real university from South Africa. It would cost you less than a degree from Rushmore and it is a real degree. However, it will require a considerable amount of effort.

If all you are looking is for a legal Dr title, then you should look into a credible state approved institution like California Coast University. Many consultants hold this type of credential that is more or less credible. They require much less work than accredited instituions and cost much less.

    Rafael,

I'm working towards a DBA from USQ (Australian) and is a good program but difficult. You are expected to spend a considerable amount of time for the degree. Also, although it is a DBA, it is research oriented and you are expected to write high quality research papers. However, the program is challenging and you will learn something for sure. Also the finance specialization is included in the DBA.

If a person has a *degree objective*, then the degree that one earns has to be credible. If it isn't, then why bother to earn one in the first place?

If a person doesn't have a degree objective, and is just looking for continuing education, for *learning* as Raphael put it in his first post, then a lot more options open up.

Raphael could simply travel a few miles south to CSULA and enroll in a few courses through Open University. It's cheap and easy (no admissions procedures). It's true that CSULA doesn't offer DBA's, but it offers lots of graduate business courses, and if you don't need another degree, who cares? Just drop in and take some B-school classes.

If Raphael doesn't really need another degree, then why structure this in terms of pursuing one?

If self-scrutiny reveals that the Dr.-title is really the objective, I'd suggest #1 trying to get admitted to local favorites Claremont, Irvine, UCLA or USC (they all offer business doctorates) or else #2 pursuing an accredited DL option. #3 SCUPS and Cal Coast are a bit further back in the pack, as is the on-campus DBA program at CA-approved California University of Business and Technology in Hacienda Heights. I'd pass on Rushmore.

I appreciate Tom Head's reference to me and I look to make up for any shortcomings noted by Bruce and suffered by anyone else here.

The University of South Africa is certainly a good choice for what you have in mind and your background seems to qualify you for study. It is probably the lowest cost route you can take, but it is rigorous.

You might also consider the DBA which Heriot Watt has in the works. The advantage to this is that it will be extemely directed and all the costs are easily understood.

If you would like information about Unisa, please send me an email message with your address. The application problem was real a few years ago, but today it is all but a legend.
