    Yeah, my uncle left me the gun when he passed. There are some hollow points in the gun bag, along with some quick reload whatamecallem thingies.

    There is a place by my house that gives free shooting lessons. If there is a charge I will pay it. I have fired rifles before, but pistols seem like a different ball game to me for some reason. I want to take an MA approach to shooting and learn the right way to handle a weapon from the start, rather than develop bad habits in the long run. I do have a couple of friends who are expert firearm guys, and they want to take me to the shooting range as well.

    So I wish to master the use and handling and care of my .38 S&W. The guys at the gun shop liked it, they say it is a very rare FBI edition S&W.

    2012 here I come!

    Thanks! I aim to do just that. Money well spent indeed.

    Speedloaders;

    You'll learn as much or more from experienced friends as far as shooting, but make sure you comply with local licensing requirements, which may require you take an "official" gun safety course that provides you with a certificate of completion. Here is a good start;

    NRAInstructors.org - Portal for NRA certified Instructors, NRA Education and Training

    What's the model number? If you open the cylinder, there should be a number, dash, and another number stamped right above where the cylinder swivel is, something like "10-5". I'm thinking it's a Model 10 with a 3-inch barrel and round butt.

    I will describe as best I can. Please forgive my ignorance. Ok, here is what I see. I has a State of Ca insignia on the right side just under the barrell, right between the barrell and the handle. Just under the State of CA emblem, I see something written in latin, though it is very tiny (almost microscopic). All I can make out is something about a "Provincia" - Province. I wil need to buy a magnifying glass. Just under the State of CA emblem, it says "Silver Anniversary " -( On the right side.)
    1957-1982"
    On the right side of the barrell it says ".38 S & W Special CTG". I opened the chamber like you said. It says MOD - "10-8"

    The handle is some kind of ornate wood. The weapon is truly beautiful.

    See ya,

    Thanks Bruce, I plan to do everthing the "legal" and right way. I don't mind being certified and studying.

    Do you think I will be ok with my uncle's gun?. I mean, nobody can report it stolen, and I can provide his death certificate, badge, etc. which show his last name/same as mine. What do you think? In other words, do I need/should register it somehow?

    If I could merge SurfDoctors thread about winning the lottery with this thread I'd say that if I had a pile of money I'd like to get one of those fancy 22 caliber rifles, you know, the kind they use in the Olympics? They probably cost a couple of grand, maybe more. I like the idea of high tech long distance shooting. I don't know if I'd be any good at it but it seems like it would be fun to try.

    Typically women make very good shooters. With smaller frames you can get into small stable shooting positions. Plus, women listen more when learning to shoot and so have better fundamentals. Men already think we know it all plus our fat beer bellies get in the way.

    I've gone out a couple of times shooting an M1 Garand. The relaxed concentration combined with the noise and watching that little hole appear in the target (even if it wasn't so close to the center) was very fun. I'd say that aside from just a simple hard athletic workout it might be the best stress management technique I know.

    Not sure how CA does it, but here if you inherit a firearm, you just have to report the transaction to the Department of Public Safety, registering the gun to you. If you call the local police or sheriff's department, they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

    As a side to this discussion I worked at an Olympic qualifier event (modern pentathlon) earlier this year and it was the first time laser guns were used. IOC observers were present because it is possible laser guns will be used for all Olympic shooting events since it is difficult, if not impossible, for participants to bring conventional guns to certain countries.
    There is also concern with lead contamination in some countries.

    You're talking Anschutz and you'd be spending as much on one of those as a good, quality used car: J.G. ANSCHÜTZ GmbH & Co. KG - Target Rifles

    I shot one in high school JROTC competitively (yes we had real guns...God bless Texas) and entered an all ages NRA match coming in 12th in the nation overall. After that the Army paid for my letter jacket (very nice of them) and I got a certificate, a set of patches, a medal, a plaque, etc. It was almost like being a celebrity for about 2 minutes. Talk about intense concentration and fun...I miss those days.

    Shows the ignorance of some countries. Those rifles weigh like 14+ pounds, are single shot, are .22lr caliber. They are less dangerous to the general public than your typical kitchen knife.

    The People's Republik of Kalifornia does it like this: Frequently Asked Questions | State of California - Department of Justice - Kamala D. Harris Attorney General

    It looks like you fill out a form and pay the state $19. Most states have no gun registration, but then that's how we rock in the free world ;)

    Yeah, that's exactly the thing I had in my mind. Those weapons are ultra cool. I've never shot one. I don't have much experience shooting. I'm not suprised to hear that they cost so much. That's why I don't actually think I'll ever own one. But a nice 22 with a good site is in reach for me. I'm mostly interested in rifles, not handguns. Despite that I've enjoyed watching some of the shooting reality shows like Top Shots and I think there's two different shows about families that are in the firearms business (forget the names). I like the science of guns and ballistics, etc. There's a lot of metalurgy involved and that's kind of my thing.

    I was on the rifle team for my military high school, even though I was heavily recruited for basketball (I was 6'3" by the time I was a junior). I liked shooting bullets better than shooting basketballs, so that's what I did.

    The team had Winchester Model 52's, but when I showed promise, my father shipped me a Walther target rifle (I forget the model number) he bought used for a song, and it made all the difference. For awhile (it may be/probably is broken by now) I held the VA state record for the kneeling position, which is ironic, since I hated that position the most.

    After I returned home, that Walther (which accepted all the .22 rounds, from CB caps through .22 Long Rifle), proved to be an effective squirrel-killer to deal with the menaces who damaged our bird feeders. Load it with a .22 Stinger, and combined with the dead-on accuracy and the power of the round, the pests didn't stand a chance.

    1.) Do you believe the 2nd amendment applies to the private ownership of firearms?---YES
    2.) Do you believe cities and states should be allowed to pass their own laws on this matter as they see fit?--YES
    3.) Do you believe that the private ownership of firearms should be limited to sporting purposes only or should firearms be allowed to be owned for purposes of self defense?--SELF DEFENSE
    4.) Do you believe that what the media terms “assault rifles” should be allowed for private ownership (semi-automatic) AK47s, AR15s, M1A, Mini 14s, Galils, etc.--NO
    5.) Do you believe availability of guns have a direct correlation on violent crimes and homicide rates and if so…how?--NO
    6.) Finally, do you own any firearms and/or shoot? Have you ever fired a fire arm?--YES/YES

    However, I do support some form of gun control/registration.

    Don't forget the mathematics...the one "great equalizer" for every wanna be sniper is the math skills required to do it correctly.

    As for an affordable target rifle there are dozens of heavy barreled models set up to take scopes...I like the Savage Arms for biggest bang for buck. If you like plinking a Ruger 10/22 is the king. If you wanted iron site target guns (no scope) this one takes the show for the price:
