My supervisor gave me permission to publish long before I'd completed my program. He also encouraged me to present at conferences. From what I've read over at Phinished.org, many PhD students are urged to publish before graduation, or as soon as they can after graduation.

When my supervisor saw my second article, he said, "Roscoe, you should include this in your thesis." :)

    Helpful resources:

    * Persist and Publish: Helpful Hints for Academic Writing and Publishing by Ralph E. Markin and T.F. Riggar (University Press of Colorado, 1991).

    * A Guide to Academic Writing by Jeffrey A. Cantor (Praeger, 1993).
