Ted Heiks, PhD, does indeed sound sweet to put on my tombstone. The problem is $18,000 a year for Union Institute can get a bit expensive, especially if I take the 11-year academic smorgasboard plan just because that's how long they'll let people stay without having to apply for a waiver of the time in program requirements. The only way I could afford $198,000 for a PhD would be if: (a) my parents become deceased at some point in time when I've still got a good 11 years and the stamina to do a PhD left in me and (b) my older brother turns out to be a very generous trust fund executor. Needless to say, (a) is neither likely nor desirable. Not sure how (b) will pan out.

    More than one way.

    Union Institute? Why there?

There is more than one way to do a PhD.

Union Institute is, at this time, the only short-residency PhD in History in the US.

There are a couple of competing newspaper guides, somewhat in the mould of the USNews rankings. One published by The Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,716,00.html another by The Guardian http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2005/0,15903,1455246,00.html and a third by the Times Higher Education Supplement. Of the three, The Times is regarded as a better guide to general reputation of an institution, whilst The Guardian guide is based upon the perceived teaching quality of an institution. Whilst I'm a natural Guardian reader most of the time, I'm not personally very keen on their guide as the bias towards effective undergraduate teaching produces some very weird results. The THES guide used to be the source of the raw data used by The Times but as they only allow access to the site for subscribers, I can't comment on the current state of play. The THES also produces a ranking list of world universities http://www8.thes.co.uk/downloads/rankings/world-rankings-16pages.pdf like the Shanghai one http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2005/ARWU2005TOP500list.htm

Is there a relative ranking in the UK? Of course there is. Up at the top there are Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and LSE. A little further behind are UCL, Warwick, Bath, Edinburgh, Manchester and a few other members of the Russell Group. Then the rest of the pre-1992 universities and a couple of ex-polytechnics fight out the middle ground, then come most of the rest of the ex-polys and then down at the bottom are TVU and a few other ex-polytechnics and ex Colleges of HE.

Re: People are killing for gas.

The key there is this: You're supposed to get a description of the perp's vehicle, the perp's license plate number, and the perp himself. No amount of money is worth getting killed over.

Hurricane Katrina is expected to make gas prices rise.

The New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says the price of gas "could rise a dollar" if oil systems are shut down from the storm. New Orleans supplies 25% of the nations oil supply.

In California the price of gas includes federal excise tax, state excise tax, and a sales tax. The sales tax (7.75% in my area) is percentage based so the state and local governments are silently welcoming this added income source.

    Due to Katrina....

The local media has been hyping another fuel shortage caused by Katrina's supposed damage to the rigs in the Caribbean. Right on cue, many of the local gas stations raised prices $.41. Of course, the as yet only alleged fuel shortage has already driven the prices up 15%!! Give me a break!!!

Problem is, this time some of the stations only went up $.10 and that kind of blows the lid on any excuse the other stations had for such a precipitous price increase. It seems that some people aren't willing to gouge for dollars (it's a new game played by everyone in the gasoline pipeline).

Of course, our state government won't do anything since their gas tax is based on a percentage and it has already brought in almost 9 figures more in revenue than projected for the year. As it is, they have a closet tax increase that they get to blame on someone else (OPEC, the petroleum industry, etc.).

Fact is, everybody is jumping on the media fueled frenzy and making a load of dough on the backs of people who have no choice but to pay. Kind of like the medical industry.....

I bet that California prices will increase even though we get 0% of our oil through the gulf. (all of CA's oil is processed here in CA). Another oil company game. Our prices are high because we process all of our own oil. But our prices go up anyway if someone farts in the midwest where we don't get our oil anyway. Of course if we had a massive earthquake, oil prices wouldn't increase a cent in any other part of the country.
