When I study I use as many sources as I can get my hands on. According to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, and I quote, "Nepes (ne'phesh) is a term of far greater extension than our 'soul,' signifying life (Ex. 21.23; Deut. 19.21) and its various manifestations: breathing (Gn. 35.18; Jb. 41.21), blood (Gn 9.4; Dt. 12.33; 140 (141).8, desire (2 Sam. 3.21; Prv. 23.2). The soul in the Old Testament means not a part of man, but the whole man--man as a living being..." Now don't play semantics with me about "translates" and "various extensions." This is what I miss about being "in the classroom." Off-campus is great. But, the lively discussions at ESR will always be cherished by me.

 

Jimmy, this might make for an interesting discussion on your Bethany forum!
Some of those folks would lean toward a KJVonly position, so you could be busy with some good heated discussion!

First, I am glad to see you don't question this practice anymore, to with:

Secondly, yes, Bethany students, for the most part, are KJV only folks. Interesting that when I presented my PhD papers I got away with quoting from various translations. I received comments and questions about it but never docked. Bethany allows students to learn by investigation and research, not by being spoon feed.

Yes, I have often wondered and been back and forth about listing the "in progress" studies, a practice that seems to be at least somewhat excepted in academic circles (certainly I am open to being corrected if I am wrong on this). I have decided to do so for now, as much as for a deadline and accountability thing as for the information. However, my thoughts on this could be swayed if it was made obvious to me that such is not proper.

In the full quote it is easy to see that I was even more concerned with listing a degree without being excepted into the program. There are some folks around that do such, you know...............
About the KJV thing, yes, I understand that Bethany does not require students to subscribe to their view on the matter.
I just wondered if it would be a good hot discussion to get you into on the Bethany forum.
Do you think the topic has been consciously avoided by some over there?

People who get mad if proven wrong are people who don't like to learn. I love to learn and appreciate your scholarly posts.

On a serious note, the Bethany forum is new so it may take some time to get into theological discussions. I did see one post from someone who thinks we should spend more time on theological discussions and less on accreditation issues. I posted he should begin the debate. You would be more than welcome to participate.
