  1. To be honest, what is there to certify? The program doesn't generate actual credit, so I suppose it could be "AACSB certified".

if not a mini-mba program, then where?

    Hello all,

I've read with interest your comments on online "mini-MBA" programs, and it seems like overall you either don't think much of them or think they are only best for people who already have MBAs.

I'm looking to take a course like these that will 1) tell me if I'm interested in getting an MBA and 2) to see if I can beef up my business knowledge enough to pass the case interviews for an entry-level position at a strategy consulting firm.

I'm two years out of undergrad and working with a big intergovernmental org that has given me a lot of management experience, though no business acumen. (Sadly the large players in the international humanitarian sphere seem to be the last to catch on that efficiency is not just a private-sector term. No social entrepreneurs in my office...)

Can I get what I need - a comprehensive business overview - from these programs, or should I go elsewhere?

Any wisdom to share? Many thanks.

It's not that I don't like the programs, it's just that I don't like the name. Calling it a mini-MBA just seems deceptive to me. I know that others don't feel the same and that's OK with me. Here's a certificate program in the Foundations of Business that will transfer nicely into an MBA program if you ever decide to go for the whole enchilada.

The name "mini-MBA" for a graduate business certificate is silly, in my opinion. We have paralegals, pharmacy technicians, and physician assistants; imagine if we called them "mini-lawyers", "mini-pharmacists", and "mini-physicians", respectively. No, the name mini-MBA would have been shot down with a little good research, even at the alumni breakfast...

    Online MBA an Jack Welch

Getting a degree online still isn't seen as credible as attending a bricks-and-mortar institution, but a legendary CEO wants to change that. Starting next month, you can get an online or in-person MBA that's blessed with the approval of Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric. He built GE into the largest company in the world and was named by Fortune as "Manager of the Century." Not a bad guy to pick up a few business tips from, right?
