If anyone has any insight, even anecdotally, on this topic, I would appreciate it. Here is the situation: I need some upper math courses for TESC's BA in Natural Sciences and Mathematics degree because I am planning on grad school in Math, either with UNISA or the UK's Open University. I have found enough courses, that's not the issue; however, I am wondering if I should take them with Open U and then have them evaluated for equivalency since the tuition looks to be lower than it would be if I take them at Empire State College, BYU, or Chadron State, plus I would get a chance to get accustomed to Open U's instruction, which has a great reputation and a testing center in the city I live in (thus no need to chase a proctor). Can anyone think of any potential pitfalls? OU's courses are much longer than US schools', and will have, for example, Linear Algebra, Group Theory and apparently some calculus topics in a single course (in this case, Pure Mathematics).
I applied engineering and math courses earned in the UK to my Excelsior BS degree. Excelsior required that they first be evaluated by ECE http://www.ece.org/. What I did was prepare a document containing all the courses I took, associated text books used, grade transcrpts (actualy letters from the colleges I attended), copies of certificates, course length in hours (explaing that a term was from Sept to June). One problem I had that all my courses were just labled "1st year mathematics, 2nd year math, 3rd year math, and so on, with no differentiation between geometry, trig, calculus, statistics, etc. But I got all the credit I thought I should get. In your case I'm not sure if a course can be evaluated prior to you taking it. Why don't you ask TESC or their authorized evaluators listed here Thomas Edison State College | About Your Evaluation
