Hi, I found the following two certificates via distance learning, so I was wondering if anybody has any specific feedback on the programme, their experience or perhaps they know someone who went. Embedded Computer Engineering Certificate - UC San Diego Extension Embedded Systems Engineering Thank you!
I work with a facet of embedded systems. UC San Diego's program slightly heaver on the programming, while UCI seems spread nearly evenly. I think embedded systems live I die by both, and it is hard to separate one from the other. Looking at the courses, in my opinion UCI would give you a better background for embedded hardware engineering, but definitely for embedded systems engineering.
jhp, thank you for your feedback. Just to give a bit of background: I'm a back-end developer working on enterprise systems (web services, .NET, Oracle, C#). I have a BSc in Transport Engineering and am currently finishing up an MSc in Software Engineering. I'm developing an interest in low-level embedded software development but I wouldn't consider myself qualified if I didn't have at least some understand of the hardware. My background in electrical and digital topics is rather basic (basic of electricity, basics of digital logic) + I had one course on computer architecture. Both certificates seem to have a decent software development component, but I somehow prefer UCSD a bit more because it offers a wider choice in the hardware aspect + it has a dedicated driver development course.
