The problem with journalists who do not do their homework is not only that they do not understand the terms that they use (such as "diploma mills"), but they also do not understand the data that they are reporting. It is obvious that this reporter was ignorant of the fact that the IPEDS data from the Department of Ed ONLY includes undergraduate students who enrolled into a university--without having attended any other university--and who graduated with a bachelor's degree from that university. So, transfer students do not count. How many UoP students are transfer students? The last report that I saw was that is was less than 1/4 of their students. Since IPEDS data ONLY reports on "traditional" students, it is less relevant to non-traditional institutions like Phoenix. It is also less relevant to community colleges who, according to IPEDS, also have abysmal graduation rates.
