I think this the bottom line of the issue, most of us would want a doctorate that could be used to teach in 3 different areas so we could optimize income potential.

I teach mainly IT Management but at some point there were not enough courses in the area so started taking accounting classes leading to a M.S in Accounting. It seems that now most positions require a CPA on top of the MS and then soon you will see the PhD or DBA in Accounting as the minimum requirement as many of the online schools have now these programs available in the online format.

Bottom line is that is all about timing, a MS in Liberal Arts with concentration in Accounting or a graduate certificate would have worked in the past when accounting professors did not have accounting graduate degrees but these credentials lose value once people start getting PhDs in Accounting with CPAs.

The OP should put emphasis in an area with demand and have a support area in case plan A doesn't work. I think getting a PhD in Project Management with some course work in Supply Chain would work, PM and SCM are related so you could justify to teach SCM if enough course work was taken in the field. Leadership is a different story, however, I really don't see much need to specialize in this area as leadership can be used in any business field so in a way anyone can teach this field if leadership skills are used in the everyday job.

Wow, all these great answers here have given me some much needed insight. I may lean more toward the Project Management concentration now. I was leaning towards the Leadership concentration based off of the advice of my supervisors. A DBA/PhD actually have very little value in my current career but I am hoping that attaining the degree will open some greater opportunities. I have no real desire to teach unless it can be teaching night classes, don't want to quit my day job just yet.
