What absolute drivel! It sounds like Bartholomew really ought to consider getting a real job.

I'll throw in my own two pesos:

If someone has demonstrated "mastery" of a field via the completion of post-graduate study, we award a masters degree.

If someone has become a "doctor" (i.e. recognized expert) of a field via even more advanced study and an original research project that extends the knowledge of her/his field, we award a doctoral degree.

A "Regent" is someone who rules or governs, so would the person who achieves Bartholemew's mythical higher degree now have the authority to rule or govern a certain discipline or field of study?

Perhaps we can thow these into the mix:

    K.A./Q.A. - King of Arts/Queen of Arts
    Dict.Ed - Dictator of Education
    Desp.Sc - Despot of Science
    H.E. - His/Her Excellency

    Antony Pina - drivel!

John Craparo - The book is 55 years old. Bartholomew would be 92 if he is living. Not sure what the time and place were like just after WWII, but times are different and I am not sure there is much significance here. While I know that an epithet is not always used as a slur - Ronald Reagan "the great communicator" or John Barrymore "the great profile"; perhaps, Dr. Bartholomew was poking some fun at higher education.
