BLACKBIRD: I've seen dept. chair persons simply ask whether the masters degree is in the discipline they seek and whether your degree is regionally accredited. Then they hire you based on whether they like you or not. Even though my masters degree is a Brick and Mortar school there were no questions about the quality, name recognition, etc. to hire me as an adjunct. I've seen the same in other depts. and other schools.

SIMON: Perhaps in your case but in many others where a job applicant for a teaching position obtained their degree is looked upon as an important part of the job application process. That is why we cannot come to expeditious conclusions based on any of our experiences and then believe that it generally applies to others. In fact it may not.

Your observations above regarding Capella are not accurate ! In fact a review of previous threads will reveal that NCU and TUI were the objects of much contention on this forum that transcended any negativity regarding Capella.

I don't see any negative comments about Capella, other than the high tuition, which is a reasonable criticism.

While that maybe be the case at some schools, if you do a Google search you will find people with NCU, Capella and Walden degrees teaching at solid masters universities through out the country, many of them more highly regarded than Charter Oak.
You mentioned Fort Hays. I looked up their faculty and found some people pursuing Capella degrees. In fact, the department chair of Justice Studies has a PhD from Capella. http://www.fhsu.edu/jus/faculty.shtml

I have no doubt that faculty at B&M schools have people with Capella, UoP, etc., credentials, because I've seen them. However, I also have no doubt that people like Steve described do exist. Unfortunately, there will always be somewhat of a stigma about DL with some people.

Hmm, yeah, I should have put that differently. I didn't mean to suggest that it would do no good whatsoever. I just think that there's a pervasive bias against schools like Capella (not just based on that one example), and while some of their graduates may do well, it would be easier to do well having gone to a different type of school.

Re: Re: Capella vs. American Military University

The cost difference seems to come from NCU requiring a few more courses (10) than AMU & Capella (7) after the transfer of credits is complete.

i dont know if you guys could help but i was thinking about getting a masters degree at UoP but it's super expensive. i really doubt the federal loans would cover me -- i was wondering what you guys think of just working my ass off to cover the difference or taking private loans. if i do the private loan thing, do you guys have any recommendations on how to go about choosing a lender? thanks.

When I looked at UOP in the past for my MBA, the Federal loans would cover all coursework. If they won't cover the tuition now, you should look at Sallie Mae's Career Training Loan for additional funding or try Chase, Citibank and Wells Fargo as they are good Student Loan lenders.

In addition, you might consider other alternatives to UOP...there are plenty of other DL Masters programs that are cheaper and accredited.

You may be right about the trashing of Capella. I did not take the remarks in this thread as trashing. I, myself, just got my Ph.D. from Capella and I hapen to agree that Capella is not the best choice when you compare the costs with the military school originally mentioned. Cost is not a judgment on the quality of the school.

Simon, that is exactly my point. I was simply trying to balance the strong generalized statements. I was not generalizing. I was simply saying that I have had a different experience. In my case, the dept. chair persons did care about the school but had less "picky" criteria required.

Of course, AMU doesn't offer doctorates, so you can't really compare them to Capella in that regard.

If AMU ever does offer doctorates without significantly increasing their tuition, that will set the DL world on its ear, IMO.
