Thanks again Gregg. All your information is helpful. And, I'm working on my ineptitude, anxiety.
Now I need to figure out the remote for the TV, how to identify anything under the hood of my car, even though I built dragsters in the sixties, how to program my cell phone and speak yuppie at the club. All this week.
Next week I'll check into the "Quack Shop" for a brain transplant from a twelve year old. So, I can play all the video games people love to harass me with as gifts.

OK, we can agree that "blogging" is an elite cyber-culture that's only appropriate for those who are excruciatingly hip. I understand that there are gay fashion-police (but not Steve Levicoff!!!) inspecting everyone's clothes and haircuts before they are permitted to "blog".

But why are "blogger's" opinions important? Why are they suddenly being taken seriously by conventional journalists? Why are "bloggers" being treated as more significant journalistic sources and more penetrating commentators than everyone else?

Why are "blogs" being treated as if they were more valuable and informative than the usenet rantings, discussion board postings or personal webpages of years past, let alone all the self-published non-electronic pamphlets and wall posters dating back to the invention of printing?

I find it a little hard to understand how the choice of cool software can increase the value of the content that it's being used to express. It's the old medium-message thing. I resist confusing the two, but apparently that view's extremely passe in our post-modern age.

If Degreeinfo's participants migrated from utilizing discussion-board software to "blogging", would their opinions about DL suddenly become more authoritative?

I suppose many bloggers' opinions are no more worthwhile than all the taxi drivers and barbers who are similarly convinced they know how the world should be run.

However, consider this. When you read a news article that quotes an expert on the subject at hand, wouldn't you potentially be just as interested or even more interested in the blog of that expert? You might just want the article, if all you want a news filter, and that's fine. But if you're really interested in a subject, then the blog of an expert on it might be well worth your while.

I mean, who here wouldn't be interested if Dr. Bear started a blog on DegreeInfo-style issues?

Believe me, I, for one, have tried to get him to do just that. I think -- have always thought -- it would be fantastic.

One thing I thought I would mention is: Be careful what you blog. Avoid publicly critcizing your employer (by name) or releasing anything that may be proprietary (this includes impending layoffs, new designs, etc). Employers look at this very closely and try to fire and sue employees who engage in this activity even while not at work. This practice is called SLAPP which refers to Strategic Lawsuits to Prevent Public Participation. It is a tactic to quell freedom of speech by corporations.

The good news is that in Cally, there is a statue against SLAPP's called anti-SLAPPs. It states that if a corporation (or person) tries to SLAPP you, you can counter sue for general damages. Check out the statue and always know your rights. (I know someone who was SLAPPed. She initially lost her job but ended up winning a large sum against a publicly traded company because the corporation does not control your actions 24/7).

    Mr.Engineer,
Thanks again for all your information. I will not blog. I do not have the knowledge to do so, and have no desire to piss anyone off. Thanks again.

    Others,
Thank you for all the valuable information. I realize I've been a pain. Like attempting to talk to a plant.

    Gregg,
You are my encyclopedia, what else can I say? Thank you
