Thanks to the great referral of some very kind folks here, I went ahead and bought the Std Deviants video tapes, set of 3, and just finished Tape 1. I found it very informative and well-explained, although a bit nutty, LOL, with the off humor, LOL! Im hoping that tapes 2 and 3 are able to clear things up for me too. We shall see.

D-day for me is 7/27 as I scheduled the exam yesterday. In looking at the sample questions from DSST subject sheet, they are all situational-type questions as opposed to theory-related.

Can any recent takers of this say whether the majority of the questions are based on the statistical theories or are they mostly problems where you have to figure something out and come up with a definite answer?

    Thanks much,
    Kim

  2. Definitely elements of both. Offhand I can't remember what the ratio is but even the "theory" type questions require you to have a solid understanding of the basics.

I found the Standard Deviants tapes to be great in this instance; when I get my grade back I'll know if it was sufficient :)

A recommendation - get a non-programmable calculator that does stats. Learn how to use it beforehand so you're comfortable.

Having said my point about the calculator, it is definitely NOT required, just helpful. However for a few questions you'll need square roots.

    Cheers,

Got my grade back today - 71, so it was definitely sufficient. If you know the Standard Deviants tapes well and do a few sample problems you should pass with little trouble.

    Passed with flying colors

    Hi Kimber,
Statistics was the last class I took to complete my BSBA. I procrastinated on that one the whole year. I hadn't taken any math since I took Calculus in 1982! I found out that I passed with flying colors. Here are a few tips that helped:

They have a great section on Dantes and CLep exams. Lots of specific tips about this exam.

    Standard Deviants videos 1-3
#1 was the most important, followed by #2, and ultimately #3

    Cliff Notes on Statistics:
Great book, covers the formulas you'll need

    Statistics for the Utterly confused:
    Great book, helped a lot.

Amazing natural supplement which stimulates the bodies creation of acetacholine (sp?). This stuff is amazing. Go to a health food store and ask them about brain food.

The other books are good too. Just make sure you are clear on all the major terms: Standard Deviation, Z score, empirical rule, etc. Bring a scientific calculator that can caluclate square roots. There was a lot less calculations than I anticipated, and more on the understanding of key terms. If you go through the SD videos a few times, Cliffs, and one of the other books, you should have no problem. Best of luck :)

Will this test meet the requirements for Excelsiors Discrete math or Calc 1.

  6. Don't think so - it meets Excelsior's Statistics requirement for business (and other) programs.
