My understanding is that all UK institutions that have been approved by the government to award degrees--and only they--may use the .ac extension in the UK. (Not a very precise way of stating it, I know, but those in the know will correct me.) As in: www.leeds.ac.uk Likewise, two other countries modeled on the UK university structure use .ac followed by their national extensions: New Zealand (.ac.nz), and South Africa (.ac.za). I have not seen the .ac extension used for educational institutions in the US, who use .edu, although its use is not so exclusive (even though it is now intended to be). Canadian universities just use the national extension .ca. Australia uses .edu.au, but I don't know how exclusive the extension is. George Brown, as well as several others on this board, could certainly tell us. There are probably others, but the UK, New Zealand, and South Africa are the major users. If I saw an institutional site purported to reside in the US but with an extension such as .ac.us or some such, alarm bells would start ringing. Are you planning to start up a university? Hope this helps. marilynd
.ac is the top level domain for Ascencion Island. Given the similiarity to .ac.uk or .ac.za the attractions of such a domain name are pretty obvious. Angela
