That's a physical trait, not a character flaw. I suppose it could correlate to poor impulse control, but even then probably not strongly enough to make it okay to laugh at the fat kids.

Not true in this case, but either way intelligence isn't a virtue, it's merely a trait. There are simple people who lead happy, productive lives and smart people who do all sorts of miserable things to themselves and others.

Well, there's that. Even then, though, while I'm not inclined to show acceptance, and he certainly shouldn't be in charge of things, I'm still more inclined to show compassion rather than derision.

Steve - That's a physical trait, not a character flaw. I suppose it could correlate to poor impulse control, but even then probably not strongly enough to make it okay to laugh at the fat kids.

Me - No one here is laughing at fat kids (unless it's you). Fat is a combination of overeating and no exercise - completely controlable by the individual.

Steve - Not true in this case, but either way intelligence isn't a virtue, it's merely a trait. There are simple people who lead happy, productive lives and smart people who do all sorts of miserable things to themselves and others.

Me - Even Forest Gump knew that "Stupid is what stupid does" You can't go on forever making stupid decisions and continue to call yourself smart.

Steve - Well, there's that. Even then, though, while I'm not inclined to show acceptance, and he certainly shouldn't be in charge of things, I'm still more inclined to show compassion rather than derision.

Me - There are tens of thousands of people in jail for doing just what he has done but you're going to give him a pass? He's a fat, stupid drug addict who has somehow risen to a level of importance in the Toronto community (by the way, this says nothing really great about Toronto). If he lived in your neighborhood and was arrested for these charges he'd be in jail. Period

I said he shouldn't be in charge of things, so that's hardly giving him a pass. Anyway, I expect that if he'd done this where I live he'd be in jail if he were poor and in rehab if he were rich, just like most places in the U.S.

Interestingly, on finding out an acquaintance was from Toronto I asked him what he thought about Ford. He said that even with all that's happened, it just showed that Ford was a regular guy and not a polished politician, that he and a lot of other people were still part of "Ford Nation", and that he hoped that Ford could get his act together and win reelection. Marion Barry indeed!

Well, we can agree on one thing, he's not a polished politician.

I guess the difference between your friend in Toronto and me is that I don't want my Governor to be a regular guy. I want him to be an exceptional guy. I want him to be excellent. Not jusr "regular". I don't want my Governor to be an irresponsible drug addict.
