    Yet another entry:

What is being counted: How many people have been banned from posting on DegreeInfo?
    Number: 42

Rules question: what happens if someone gets part 1 right and part 2 wrong? Or vice versa (the answer to everything, as the Hitchhiker's Guide tells us, being '42.')

Dr. Bear has correctly guessed what is being counted. It is the number of members that have been banned. Now we just need a correct count.

Looking at this list brings to mind the fine story, apparently a true one, of when Karl Gauß's primary school teacher gave his class the 'busy work' assignment of adding up the numbers from 1 to 100, believing he had bought some private time, and little Gauß raised his hand with the (correct) answer, 5050, in less than 30 seconds. How did he do that?

Is this the contest that mods can't enter?

    That is correct-

Here's what I would do. You start with the 100 and then recognize that every pair of numbers from the opposite ends of the string equals another 100 (99+1, 98+2, 97+3, etc.) Then you just need to count the pairs and see what's left alone (that would be that pesky 50).:cool2:

I am declaring Dr. Bear to be the winner. This is partly due to the fact that he guessed part #1 correctly and partly because no one else is even trying.

On the day of Dr. Bear's degreeinfo numerology thread it caught my attention that we had just passed the 1,500 mark for banned members. Can you believe it? Most of them were just your garden variety spammers but if you scroll through the list (sorry but only the Mods can do that) it's interesting to see the familiar names that pop up and try to remember what they did to get themselves banned. Maybe someday it will become a chapter in "The History of DegreeInfo" by Ted Heiks.

BTW, is it legal to ship beer through the mail?

Quite a variety of laws. Here's a good discussion of what people do -- and what they don't do, from the "homebrew" forum: How do you legally ship beer? - Page 2 - Home Brew Forums

BTW - I heard the Gauß story (and explanation) in college - not math, but a psych. class having to do with intelligence, IIRC. Kizmet's explanation is, of course, correct.

Maybe not, but I believe Dr. B is in California.
So you could just order a BevMo gift card for him online, and he can pick up his own beer there.

Does the East Coast have big liquor store chains yet?
Seems like most liquor stores in New England are either mom-and-pop operations, or state stores (like in NH).

    Let's ask Mr. Owl:

Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get the the center of a Tootsie Pop?

    Mr Owl: Let's find out--a one...a two hoo...a three (*CRUNCH!*)...three.

    Dr Bear,
If you PM me your address a shiny new Starbuck gift card will also arrive.

Nah. Here's how to do it. Take 100 + 1, which gives you 101. Divide that by 2, which gives you 50.5. Then multiply by 100 and you get 5050.

That's funny, but several orders of magnitude lower than the number she is looking for.

How can you use that model if you want to add 1, 2, 3, 4 ?

Florida does, and they're awesome. Virginia's stuck with Soviet-style state-owned ABC stores.

That would be fine with me but I'm guessing that your California alcohol superstore doesn't sell Narragansett Lager.
