A friend was just victimized by the amazingly evil 809 area code scam. An urgent message was left on his answering machine, he returned a call to an 809 number, and he was billed $2,400 for his one-minute call. The scam is described many places, including http://www.att.com/fraud/home.html Since $2,400 is a pretty typical price for a diploma mill degree, can we anticipate a diploma mill with an 809 phone number, so that when you return their call, you've bought your degree.
Pfui. I checked www.urbanlegends.com, which I should have done first, which led to http://www.scambusters.org/809Scam.html which points out the scam is a real one, but the costs do not appear to be nearly that high -- more like $24 a minute. Trying to reach my scammed friend to see if and where there was a misunderstanding.
