Hello, I have read a thread (can't find it now) that was about Sweden and its universities and that some of them would offer courses for free. Is it true? Also, maybe you know of Sweden universities that offer online Bachelor's degrees in English Literature. If there are indeed universities that offer such degrees, I would love to hear about them because I am looking for an inexpensive online Bachelor's degree in that field (I have posted a thread about it yesterday). Thanks everyone. Greetings from Germany!
Here's one thread that might be of interest http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/33321-sweden-charge-foreigners-fees-starting-2011-a.html There are others to be found by dropping the keyword(s) Swedish/Sweden into the search function.
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I don't really understand who has to pay the fees. If you're not Swedish and live outside the EU then you'll have to pay, but what about EU residents? Do they also have to pay fees? Since I am from Germany and therefore a EU resident I would like to know if I have to pay fees or not. Does somebody know the answer to my question? Thanks in advance.
Did the Swedes end up charging foreigners at the beginning of this year? I never did follow up on that story.
I looked at many Swedish universities and this is what I found: -from https://www.universityadmissions.se/en/All-you-need-to-know1/Studying-in-Sweden/Fees-and-scholarships/ So as a Eu resident I will not have to pay any fees. That's good for me but not good for Non Eu residents. Too bad that they charge other foreigners. However, even if I won't have to pay for courses, I still haven't found any online B.A.s. I have contacted 3 Swedish universities concerning an online Bachelor's in English Literature and one said that they don't offer it. I will have to wait for the other two answers and see what they say. I will keep you updated as it might interest Eu residents on this board.
Out of curiosity, since you already looked, is there any mention of how high fees will be for non-EU foreigners?
Yes, I have looked at 3 universities that offer English Literature courses and they charge different amounts for these courses. But as an example - a 30 ECTS points course in English would cost 34,876 SEK - that's approximately 5085,82 US Dollars. So if you need 180 ECTS points in order to get a B.A., the cost would be really high. Since I don't know your interests, I cannot tell you what other courses cost. But I suggest having a look at https://www.universityadmissions.se/intl/search?period=VT_2012&level=graduate&distance=on&distanceWithoutMeetings=on There, you can find all distance learning courses without required meetings at a Bachelor's level. In order to change your search selections you have to press that button and then you can search for what you're looking for and thus, see how much a specific course costs.
Wow! That seems really costly. I wonder if some of the other Scandinavian countries have started to charge high prices too. Has anyone looked into Denmark or Norway? I was of the impression that they used to have tuition-free education too, but I haven't investigated them in ages.
When Sweden announced that non-Swedes and non-EU students would have to pay fees I urged interested students to apply for the distance MBA program at BTH https://www.bth.se/eng which I had previously enrolled in. Subsequently I enrolled in a distance MS program in health science at Khristainstad UC. Information & facts about Kristianstad University - Högskolan Kristianstad - kunskap utbildning program fristående kurser högskolestudier utlandsstudier forskning Both of these programs were FREE and completely in English. Now each costs about $15000 US. All Swedish universities (and UCs or Hogskolas) are government supervised and well-regarded throughout the world.
Pink, unless I missed something it looks like only EU citizens are eligible for the zero tuition in Sweden, and non-EUers resident in the EU have to pay tuition fees.
Sweden Those awarded Refugee Status in EU countries are also eligible. Swiss also, even though they're not in the EU.
Update: I talked to those universities that offer courses in English via distance learning and only one of them has told me that I could basically take many courses that lead up to 180 ECTS points and then apply for a B.A. degree. And that would be for free. Isn't that great? I still can believe that these courses are for free, at least for me. The other universities don't have enough web based English courses that lead to 180 ECTS points, so there's only one university that I can apply to. Anyway, that's still pretty great. I have contacted someone from the English department because I wanted more information about these web based courses and now I have to wait for a reply. The thing is that these courses require 'online meetings' via a web cam and skype and I wanted to know when these meetings take place. I have a little daughter and I am a stay at home mom so if these 'online meetings' take place very often, I'm afraid I couldn't be part of them, since she won't let me So I don't really know if I could start studying right now. Maybe I could only apply when she is in kindergarten so I could have time for these meetings, learning, assignments etc. But I fear that by that time, Swedish universities will start charging EU residents as well. I guess the only thing I can do is wait.
