I applaud you for trying to stretch the money not only into a BS, but a grad degree. Most parents I know will pay for the BS, then tell the kid they are on their own if they want a grad degree. Stories like the young lady in debt for 200K come in mind. Good for you MO. You are teaching your daughter the value of a dollar. More parents should do so.

As far as the dorm thing. I guess some could see the merit, and I could as well. As a parent, you must look at the bad side of dorm life. Students chugging 4Locos (6 beers in one cheap drink), suddenly come up with strange devious ideas. Here is one very sad reality:

Seventh sex assault reported on Sacramento State campus - Sacramento News - Local and Breaking Sacramento News | Sacramento Bee

Seven cases of rape since 9/10? These things happen even in the most exclusive schools. Most likely, the more exclusive, the quicker the "incident" will be buried. Now, of course, drinking and drug use has always been a part of dorm life, FOR SOME, not all.

Also, thanks for doing a great MOD job, I know it can be a lot of work.

I can see why that 'nobody' avoids the CSUDH Biology degree - it is known to be one of the toughest biology degrees in So. Cal. A friend received her biology degree there and received unsolicited good job with offers from pharma companies, food companies and pathology departments (she ended up in the latter working for a city near her home).

CSUDH also has great QA (one of the few around the country), geography, and political science programs. The reason this school is not popular is because most students are commuters.

CSUDH was also one of the first schools to offer a DL degree (HUX) back in the 1970s as I recall.

If I had a daughter, I would do everything in my parental power to discourage her from getting a degree, unless it was both cheap and online.

Good point. It's sad when young people spend all of their money or run up huge debt for a bachelor's degree that is really just a piece of paper. I'm proud of my kid, brilliant student who also has good sense with her money.

I will offer my advise she has an associates degree I would make a simple deal you agree to pay no more than X dollars a year for her education lets say what a decent state school would cost plus 10% for example $10,000 and she covers the rest if its over that. And you must approve her major and demand she maintain in major a very respectable GPA. You split the costs for books and housing again for the lowest cost option for both.

You have no duty to send her to school but I see you helping if you can. My children each got $5,000 upon graduation from High School and could use that for their education after that they were on their own, with us helping with books and fees 50/50 which we thought was fair.

Do you realize that in most of the world the colleges and universities, even the best ones, are "commuter colleges"? The big campus with dorms inside it is more a american phenomenon.

And even though the USA does has some of the best colleges in the world, it doesn't have the monopoly on them.

WHat about a ALB from Harvard Extension? Way cheaper and it's Harvard. And she could take the summer semesters there, in the dorms, if she really wants the dorm experience and all.

That is a very interesting suggestion. I'm going to look into that. Thank you very much.

various christian organizations have opportunities for teaching English around the world (you have to raise support or pay your own way), they provide the contacts, logistics, paperwork and organization

this will give her the opportunity to teach, travel, and put something interesting on her resume and college application

they also have opportunities to do medical work, work in orphanages, build schools and other stuff, from 1 week to 2 years

    Update

Update: My daughter is filling out the application to attend UCI. This is a much more sound decision both financially and academically. It's about 40% cheaper than the no-name school she was considering. She is not interested in DL for her bachelor's but is considering it for her master's degree.

Are you sure she read the website? The deadline was Nov 30 for the UC schools including transfers.

Yes, but there is an appeal process for getting in anyway. Spoke with admissions today and the prospect is positive.

Excellent choice!!!!!!!! She is going to love it. I used to go spend the night in my older brothers UCI dorm sometimes, and it was a really fun atmosphere. Of course, cutting the dorm out and commuting would save quite a bit of money, and she can still partake in the fun activities if she wishes.

It went great. I finished my MBA 6/10! The graduation was very nice. My wife and parents went to watch me receive my degree. Also, my wife if currently pursuing a BGS degree with a humanities specialization from Aspen. She started 1/16/11. I am excited for her.

I think UC Irvine is a great institution and your daughter would certainly get a great education. I am not as familiar with the transfer process, but I assume it is competitive. My only suggestion is that your daughter should apply to a back up (maybe a cal state school) just in case. Hopefully it works out and your daughter becomes an anteater.

Thanks Broheim! It still feels dream like. It took a lot of work, and sometimes I was doubtful I would finish. I actually started as an English major at UOI, so business was not my forte. Wew, it's over.

I called Cal State Long Beach today and they informed me that they have (are you ready for this?) 70,000 applications for fall 2011! They informed me that there was little to no chance of her getting in there anytime soon. 70,000 applications, can you believe that?
