I wish I hated their program and didn't feel the need to put myself through this torture. This guy is driving me freakin nuts! Here is our latest correspondence:

"Hi sorry to bother you again, but I really like your program. The discrete math however is kinda a killer for me. Is there anywhere in the curriculum where you cover discrete math concepts? Or would you have a suggestion of where a person could pick up discrete math? Or do you find discrete math is really not a necessary component in CS education?

"My experience is that discrete math is normally a part of a programming major.

I do not stay up-to-date with math courses. You are welcome to contact the college math department to discuss the specifics of what is covered in the math courses required by the major. One or more math courses may touch on some areas of discrete math.

If you desire a specific course not taught at Limestone, you can apply to take the course as a transient student. Normally such a course will not substitute for a required course, but could count as an elective.

Let me know if you have further questions.

"Thanks for writing back. What is the purpose/focus of the programming option of the computer science online? Are you not the advisor for that program? Who would be the contact for the computer science program? I know your focus is more toward the internet management degree. Is the computer science online programming option not a programming major per say?

"Yes, I am the academic advisor for all CSIT online majors, which includes programming.

The purpose of the programming concentration is to educate students in how to solve business problems using various programming techniques and languages.

Run, don't walk away from this program!

CSU, Chico offers an online BS in Computer Science:

    http://rce.csuchico.edu/cen/

Courses are a bit pricey ($1675/course).

Old Dominion University offers an online BS in Computer Science:

    http://dl.odu.edu/database.php?todo=program&id=31

There are a ton of other BS CompSci degrees available online in the US. To get the full picture, copy/paste the following search query in Google:

bachelor "computer science" "online degree" OR "distance learning" site:.edu

    Good luck!

Baker is a good school to go to. I didn't know their Computer degree included discrete math. Good luck!

    The torture seems self-inflicted.

What do you mean discrete mathematics is the killer for you - the course is too difficult or the course is not specifically listed as being available at the school? From the email exchange it seems to be the latter. In that case, the advisor pointed you to the mathematics department. I checked the Limestome College web site and could not see any reference to discrete mathematics; tired eyes no doubt on my part.

Umm... PROGRAMMING is the focus of the computer science (programming option). No offense intended but if you cannot parse the email communications in English you shoud consider a career outside of IT or CS.

Did your courses include video and audio lectures? Were you able to network with students and faculty?

Sentinel I was trying to get a point across to him as nicely as I could. He said discrete math is a normal part of a programming degree. Yet there isn't any in their programming degree. I am confused by his statements here.

Further I wanted him to open a dialog about the programming focus more than his one or two points. He doesn't seem to want to do that. Most other school are happy to share what is great about their program. Now to give him credit if I ask him about the internet management degree he will sing like a bird.

As for discrete math being a killer, most graduate program require it, most cs programs have it so I question the integrity of a program that doesn't and that is killing the deal for me.

My problem is I really like the rest of the program.

I completed my BBA online at Baker. There were no video or audio lectures and you were free to network with students and faculty but it seemed everyone just wanted to get the classwork done and graduate - too busy to network.

Also, I'm not sure if this will help, but there is a DVD for $70.00 on Discrete Math here:

    http://www.comap.com/product/videodvd/index.html

I'm not sure if its comprehensive but it might help.
