Growing UK concern over US 'torture flights'

There is mounting pressure on the United States to explain reports that it used European airports to transport terrorism suspects to other countries for torture.
The group, Liberty, has asked police chiefs across the UK to look into allegations that the flights called at a number of British airports.
It has been reported at least 12 airports in England and Scotland were used by CIA planes, allegedly carrying terror suspects to covert prison camps.
Britain's Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says he has written to Washington about the claims, expressing concern on behalf of all EU countries.
He says he is waiting for a reply.
The US Government has refused to confirm or deny the existence of secret prisons.

Terrorists suspects, tortured and locked up for ever in secret or inaccessable locations, with no legal representation, visiting rights or no rights at all!

Is this sort of behavior really going to 'win the war' against terrorism, or inflame it further?

It would likely inflame it further, IMHO. Also it would further alienate the rest of the world community and thereby further weaken what was once an almost universal worldwide alliance against terrorism that we had immediately after 9/11. Just the rumors that such things are/did occur is currently doing damage.

Well, if all they have to do is spread rumors for people to believe it we are sunk......

Unfortunately, many of the 'rumours' are factual and have substance!

I was talking with a good friend of mine last night who is a conservative Moslem.

He made the comment that if Israel and the world would give Palestine their home land then most of the arguments used by the extremists to recruit terrorists would be cut from under them.

Sounds a simple solution, and giving the Palestinians their own home land also sounds a reasonable proposition. So why can't it all happen? The only losers, surely, would be the armament companies!

DtechBA is right. Please, lets not inflame terrorists, bent on destroying any society differing from their own, or people believing hype. We are not dealing with rational opponents. Common sense dictates the prisoners be separated and placed somewhere unknown. If you just happen to be visiting friends, while they are building a bomb or shooting at me, I'll concern myself with your innocence when there is time.

The media has been the cause of unnecessary danger, by giving away positions of troops (and cops), on too many occasions. We are at war folks, not your everyday "catch a bad guy" situation. Our enemies are counted in the millions ++ by overt act or omission.

I guess some people feel their need to know (inquisitiveness) supersedes the safety of civilians and troops. The embarrassing treatment some terrorists received, due to poor oversight and frustrated sadistic guards, is not that uncommon within our own prison system. The word torture encompasses all unpleasant acts, now days. I was tortured by traffic.

If any DI poster has been a victim of "Gestapo" tactics, other than being inconvenienced at the airport, please let us know. I've found most posters to be good folks with varying viewpoints. Only a couple have been unpleasant. But my observations give no insight as to malevolent intent.

Why do some folks insist our government is conspiring to cause us harm rather than give protection? Why do some feel an enemy, willing to kill anyone including themselves, should be considered more trustworthy? And why do some believe other governments, even after being found in collusion with the enemy, are our friends with no ulterior motives? I find the actions of the others gives more insight.

Liberty's Shami Chakrabarti appears to be one of the most naive persons on earth. And giving Palestine more land makes as much sense as giving N. Korea S. Korea to keep the peace. Palestine is just another excuse for radicals publicly stating the destruction of Israel as their goal. None of their Muslim brothers wanted them.

If you distrust our government move to Canada or anywhere you want. It's your right, just as questioning is your right. Who benefits most from our internal strife? Make room for the millions of U.S. loving folks wanting to move here.

If we get through these times, I'm sure everything will be subject to microscopy. The good and bad will receive what they deserve. Scumbagitis is contagious and infects all political parties. We have plenty of Scumbagologists to diagnose and treat the diseased.

Those citizens feeling so mistreated and abused, by this country, can get a free ticket out. I only stipulate that you cannot be a criminal, must renounce your citizenship, and must never return. I'm certain thousands of citizens will take up the slack when I'm broke and living under a bridge.

For some reason, I doubt I'll lose sleep tonight awaiting requests.

Good points, all...... But the portion of your quote above also causes me to ask "Why do some folks believe in New Age philosophy, and find comfort in channeling ancient cave people and drawing energy from crystals rather than turning to the mainstream religions that have existed for hundreds, if not thousands, of years?" The same answers exist for both groups, I am afraid......

In other words, people in the Western world - and in particular your average American - are spoiled, uneducated, uninformed, and have never had to honestly sacrifice anything in their lives to retain their consumption based standards of living. They are also prone to believe a whole new set of myths with even more fantastic implications than those that have been part of our culture and civilization since the 3rd century AD, or before.

Given that our current struggle with terrorism is a barely disguised conflict between two religions (Islam and Christianity), it is most disturbing that so many of our people have turned their backs on their own religion and are unwilling to fight for it, preferring instead to listen to the gutteral moans of Shirley McClaine as she channels the latest cave/hunk to her bedside.

We need some good old Old Testament kick-their-ass religion back in this country!

I'm with you Carl. And still no response? I'm adding the stipulation that cowards cannot flee, due to me. I'm kinda on PC probation. So, I figured offering assistance to the masses of asses would not violate anything. The "Ozone-ites" can channel themselves.
