Why wouldn't I want to enroll (Aspen University)?

Thanks Dave, we’ll fix this today. We have new web technology in place that means we can have multiple non-technical people keep our content up to date. However, the down side, apparently, is that we have multiple non-technical people keeping our content up to date.. but a few inconsistencies is well worth the price, we are pretty happy with the new platform (incorrect headings of course not included) ...

Yes, Abner, that is pretty accurate. The Aspen MA in Psychology and Addictions Counseling seems to satisfy the education requirements for certification in most states as a chemical dependency counselor. It probably also satisfies most, if not all, of the educational requirements in the states that have licensure for chemical dependency counselors. The chemical dependency counseling world is a complex affair that overlaps with addictions counseling and touches marriage and family therapy, so it is hard to say anything about certification / licensure that applies in all 50 states.

Anyway, I'm absolutely thrilled that Aspen has made this program available to addictions counselors at such a reasonable tuition cost; it is a life-saving business and this affordable degree will only help the fight!

So Dave W. you are in favor of Aspen? Is that because they offer degrees at such a reasonable cost and don't pretend to be more than they are? As opposed to the schools that, as you suggest, take lots of your money and offer no guarantee of any benefit to the student?

At this moment, I like the addictions counseling degree at Aspen University. From memory, I've generally had good things to say about Aspen, especially the IT / IS degrees. Currently, I also think the M.Ed. at $3,600 is a great value, if the DETC accreditation meets the students' requirements in their district or however they intend to use it. So, yeah, I think people should take good look at those degrees at Aspen and perhaps others... I'm not a shill yet but I'm encouraged by all the latest developments.

    DETC for teacher advancement

The issue has been raised in the past but I'm not sure anyone has supplied any evidence one way or the other.

Can DETC units or degrees be used by teachers for salary advancement?

My local K-12 school district (in California) says yes. DETC accreditation is acceptable for "column advancement".

In contrast, the local public community college states that:

Courses taken for advancement on the salary schedule and/or for the purpose of attaining a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctor’s degree must be completed at a college or university recognized as accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Interesting. John Bear pointed out in an earlier thread that CA law states that any accredited master's degree recognized by the DoE should suffice for teaching at the community college level. If that's correct, your local JC may be following state law.

I looked at a JC in my old CA stomping grounds, and all they say is "accredited".

arg. . . may NOT be following state law.

    Couldn't get the edit button.

Yes, and community college teaching often requires direct experience with the subject more so than academic credentials. A DETC Masters degree or experience with the topic would suffice; the presence of both would even better.

Does Aspen University run this special pricing every year?

I seem to recall them doing it a few times now, but I don't think it's a regularly scheduled thing.

I'm tempted to look at this seriously myself next year if it's available again.

You may want to drop a PM to David, he may be able to arrange something.

OK, so this all starts to seem just a little bit too much like advertising . . . which is a TOS violation . . . get it?

Wow, the dickhead level of this thread has just increased by +1.

Please take that as meaning either ShotoJuku or myself depending on your point of view :) First rule of courtesy is not mocking the moderators. Second is not calling people names. However, I invoke the ancient schoolyard right of reactive douchebag awesomeness to support my actions.

APSEN have created the WOW factor with its pricing and perceive good quality education. We should encourage the management of ASPEN to not increase its prices. As a dropout from NCU, in my opinion NCU lost it competitive advantage of low cost by constantly jacking it prices up. Virtual for profit schools are seeking a role model. A role model where it students does not have to defend their school and their education. A few excellent role models are Open U (UK), UNIZA, and Athabasca U, Royal Road U., Excelsior, TESC, and COSC - Athabasca U MBA and DBA are not low cost.

    Darn it!

I cannot make up my mind about what program to enroll into...

Prices will go up for at least twice as much.
