Why do students take online courses when they don't know how to use the internet?

I teach online for a non-profit school and believe me, they readily accept (and I believe encourage) students that do not know how to use the internet, are not experienced using a computer, have very poor writing skills, and do not have regular access to a computer.

I find it very sad. I also work for a for-profit school, but these students are graduate students. A few of them also seem to lack regular access to a computer/internet, and are lacking in knowing even the basics of participating in an online course, but no where near the numbers I see at the undergrad level with the non-profit school.

I cited a lawsuit filed by the US Dept. of Justice against Education Management Corp., which includes the following charges:

Does this sound like your non-profit employer ? If so, maybe you should let the US Dept. of Justice know about the situation.

For the record, I don't believe that all non-profits are angels, or that all for-profits are devils. But I do think that a disproportionate number of the best schools are non-profit, and that a disproportionate number of the worst schools are for-profit.

No, my employer is not like that. The for-profit you are talking about is obviously the worst of them. I agree that not all non-profits or for-profits are angels or devils. Surely the "best" rated schools are going to be long established schools, and probably non-profit. But if comparing mostly online non-profit schools to for-profit online schools, I disagree that there is that much difference in tactics. Just a difference in opinion. I do respect your opinion.

    Possibilities:

    1) They are so bad at using the internet that they somehow accidentally enrolled.

    2) They are using avant-garde end user techniques that contemporaries do not understand nor appreciate but that future generations will categorize as genius.

    3) Quantum mechanics. We are in just one of many worlds, according to one interpretation, and our version of reality happens to be that of this ironic paradox. In another world, Matt Brent is the Maniac Craniac, Ted Heiks is the Batman and online students know how to use the internet.

    4) They are all proud graduates of MUST University's MS in Information Technology program.

    5) Maybe it isn't user error. After all, in the words of Dark Helmet: Spaceballs Escape Pod Scene [HD] - YouTube

Which was an absolute joke, if you ask me. Quick: what's the difference between a book and a newspaper? Are you stumped? Then YOU need Excelsior's information literacy course! The best $300-something you will ever spend in your life!
