Why do so many lurk here at Degree Info and do not post?

Well I discovered and joined the forum because I had some questions about specific programs.

However, most of the discussions revolve around American universities or the American education system, and I don't know much about that therefore can't really contribute.

I still check it everyday though, for a few reasons: something interesting regarding DL in general might come up; inspiration from success stories; I simply enjoy reading about what people are studying or their experiences.

Every on line group has always had more lurkers than posters going back as far as any ARPAnet old timer can recall. I came on line in the earlier 1980s and folks who were old timers then reported the same thing.

Please be assured it isn't this forum. Its the nature of on line groups.

I think part of it is the well intentioned delay in posts for those who are new. It means you post something and it may be hours before it shows up (or next day or not at all). I have also had posts go missing and there was nothing negative in them at all. Then there was the glitch where I could log in and be listed as on the board (at the bottom of site) but not really able to post since though logged in and noted on the bottom it was not registering at the top of the board.

With all of that, if you are new, you sometimes find it less frustrating to simply read the posts.

PS Oh Happy Day this post went right through!

You might be out of moderation now. I'm not sure how many posts it takes but when it's done, it's done. Sorry for the frustrations.

I am a lurker, and here for a reason.

I am 45, a foreign worker in USA (call it H1B), hence not eligible for any grants/scholorships/loans etc. I dont get a very fat paycheck, and I am the only bread-earner in the family (of 4), and live paycheck-to-paycheck. So, I am always on lookout for cheaper (but accredited) graduate programs/credits, especially in CS/IT/IS related fields.

I want to do my MS in CS/IT, and I am just waiting for the right moment.

I lurked here for some time only because you guys were answering all my questions.

The only reason I came out of that mode was because HMU was not talked about in-depth in theses forums, and I could not locate any additional information on the net with feedback about students and former students.

Well, if you've been lurking, then I believe you took advantage of (or are planning to) what Aspen University recently offered (I think they've expanded the offer). Goodluck!

I lurk for most of the reasons others do; looking for information, not a lot of experience in online learning, etc. As my school progresses, I'm sure I'll be able to post more and answer more questions, but for now I continue to read and learn. Also, since I'm in the military, a lot of things on this board aren't relevant to me, so I don't contribute to them.

I was a lurker from the early 2000s. I read almost every post. In 2006 I start posting. This was a mistake for degreeinfo because the quality of all the other posts went down. I don’t read them all anymore. A fair amount of the posts have no substance. I blame myself! Degreeinfo has been good to me and I let it down. Thanks degreeinfo for all the good things you have done for me. You were my best friend.

Hi, I'm a longtime lurker who is delurking to post this.

I believe I have one post to my name on the board, I asked a question about public health degrees and got some good answers.

But then my focus changed, and I decided I didn't want to study public health anymore. I still came and read the forums quite a bit, because they're so full of information and I found threads discussing options I never even knew existed. [I spent quite a lot of time with that search box, as you might guess! :-]

Now I'm taking a few courses through Clovis Community College and preparing to take a few CLEPs to get credit to transfer to Utah State University's communicative disorders undergrad program, with the eventual goal of getting admitted to a grad program and becoming a speech therapist.

Speech therapy is a career I would not have considered unless I read about it here at DegreeInfo, and I am quite grateful to the forum for introducing me to this career path [I recently completed an informal shadowing of two speech therapists and thoroughly enjoyed myself]. I was also pleased when I read about the numerous distance education options available in the field.

I like to lurk since I don't usually have much to add to a conversation, even online. I really enjoy reading all the posts and you all as a group have been more helpful in my educational goals than you can imagine, even if I haven't mentioned it before.

So, that's my story. And great thanks to all of you from this particular lurker. ;)

Welcome, Kara! I found your post fascinating... especially the part about lurking because you didn't have much to add to a conversation... That certainly does not hold some people back on this discussion board. ;)

    guilty!

I am one of those lurkers. I have been lurking on this site for years and have usually had my questions answered by just reading the posts. This site has been very helpful in my education. Since I started lurking I have finished my AA degree at my local community college, finished my bachelor degree through Thomas Edison State College, and have completed all my course work and am just working on my thesis for my masters degree at National University. Thomas Edison and National University were both done through distance education and I learned about thier programs from this site. I don't post very often though because I just don't think I am as knowledgable as most posters here. This site has been a great help though. I will try to be more active though in the future since I do visit this site almost daily.

We are glad to have your input. You might know more than you think. Your personal experiences can be very helpful to others; you don't have to be an expert to share what you have done and experienced. That's often more helpful than expert opinions anyway. Welcome!

I agree here. I'm a member of a couple other Vbulletin forums and I know there is the functionality available to have avatars. Great info on this site and it is kindof a niche thing which draws people, but why no ability to post our schools logo or something?

Sorry for the lack of avatars and logos. If I remember correctly, the logo posting was taken away about a year ago because a few people were using the ability to post spam oriented material. The problem is the fact that this board is so extremely popular and that makes it a prime target for all kinds of people who think it should be an opportunity for them to advertise something. The fact that the board is pretty much spam free is one of the things that make it so attractive.

I actually like the lack of the graphics. It makes the board cleaner and more directly focused on discussions.
