For an individual who wants to be a counselor/therapist..an MS degree in counseling studies or an MA in psych?

Based upon what has been said in this (and other) forum(s), you reallyreally need to look at the licensure laws in your state. Don't say, "I don't need a license for what I want to do." because in ten years you may feel differently but then you'll be stuck with a degree that won't do what you want it to do. So, look at the licensure laws in your state. Figure out what sort of a degree will make you eligible for licensure and then go for that. Most states issue licenses through their Department of Public Health. Check out that website. I'm sure it's spelled out pretty clearly.

Kizmet is right, though based on what I have heard from counselor friends the best masters for a counselor is one that doesn't delay your doctorate for too long. In Oregon, a MSW is the best non-dr if you want to bill insurance.
