..since you're asking for opinions.. :)

Overall, I would suggest you sit down and write out your short term & long term goals.

Seeing what you want to do in writing will help you weigh the pros and cons and may even surprise you.

I don't know of anyone who knew that they wanted a career change in 15 years down the road. A lot of things can happen in that amount of time.

For the time being, however, I would say that a B.S. in IT would net you the best results given your current career choice and employment situation.

If you want to pursue a career in counseling ( WWW addicts? ;) ) I would still go for a B.S./IT for now and then, as the years progress, continue your education in the counseling field. Get Certificates & Diplomas and you can always work on another degree in your secondary field of interest throughout the years as well.

Hope my perspective on your situation helps a little :)

I think it is astonishing the number if IT people who want to go into counseling. I've never seen such a strong desire in another profession. I actually got registered and interned with incarcerated youthful substance abusers. Personally, I found that I couldn't hack spending that much time down in the muck, as much as I really wanted to help. My wife, a CIS college instructor, went to grad school to study applied behavioral science. I've known many others over the years as well.
However, I hope you have completely different experiences and results. My comment was just meant to make note of the IT/counseling counnection, not to dissuade you in any way at all. I wish you all the best in this transition.

There are many great schools out there where you can obtain an IT degree.

Personally I just enrolled in FHSU and am rather pleased with them. Very friendly staff - and the course cost is extremely competitive, $122/credit hour + books.

There is no tuition so all you pay is the credit hour fee and add your books. I was able to get -all- books I needed for the 4 courses I'm taking over the summer from chapters.ca (since I'm in .ca) via their used book search and saved quite a bit of money that way.

I reckon' taking 4 courses ( 12 credit hours ) including books cost me ~$1600USD.

It really depends in which direction you want to go within the IT field - I wanted to take the degree program from Champlain College but the cost was insane ( $58k vs $20 ) so I searched... and searched ( with the help of the folks on this great board ) and went to FHSU's website. I checked them out - called and spoke to them, applied, got accepted and here I am.. my Summer courses start June 7th....

Oh.. of course I'm enrolled in the
B.S. in Information Networking and Telecommunications :)

    Good Luck with your endeavour!

From what friends of mine in psychology tell me, you need at least a Master's to even get started in counseling.

i've looked at fort hays, troy state and western govern

i liked fort hays program..i'm assuming you are referring to fort hays as FHSU..i wonder if they will accept all my credits from my A.A.

let me know how your classes are going...i wouldnt be able to enroll until aug at the earliest..

  9. If you wanted to apply yourself you could do a bit of both -

    - get your IT degree from whichever University out there that meets your needs.

    - then, get a Psychology degree from Excelsior by taking the Psych GRE + a few other required courses/exams.

You'll then have 2 BS degrees for little more than the cost of one. If down the road you wanted to do counselling you could go for your master's, or not.

    Cheers,
    Mark
