Most are too far in debt to be playing with anything.

Agreed. And if you're not smart - how did you earn a Ph.D.? :)

Agreed again - accent on "should be." I've known people who were very advanced academically - including doctorate holders, who were just hopeless at life outside the University walls. Couldn't make a living. Welfare recipients, some of them. Earn another degree? Easy! Keep the rent paid and food in the house? Major problem!

I reported in Bear's Guide many years ago that there was a serious effort underway at the University of Chicago to offer a degree higher than the Doctorate. It was to have been called the Chancellorate. As far as I know, the notion was not met with wild enthusiasm in the academic world, and it faded away. It was to have required seven years to complete. I wrote at the time that most awardees would be on Social Security by the time they got it, and would not have to worry about a job.

This problem should be fixed, because it becomes a hindrance as a barrier to entry for the poor, and severe poverty for the unfortunates with student loan who are unemployed or underemployed

Yes - It's easy to agree that most problems should be fixed, including this very big one. But how?

Not everyone sees it as a problem because it mostly affect the poor. There was a time when only the rich got an education. Now most countries have up to free secondary.

A more profound question at hand: What will Phdtobe call himself once he actually has his Ph.D.? o_O

The surest way to meet the maker, is retirement. I don’t think I may have too much time to ponder that question if i ever reach that far. Planning my Phd and my pension to coincide at the same time, it may be a question best answered by my estate . Unfortunately DI won’t get to know the answer .

DI by then may have the technology to update user names without losing posting. I need a pompous name like PHDiam.

You never know. I've been retired for 25 years - still going ... and going ... and going , etc. I hear that Dr. Steve Levicoff is now a distinguished Trucker Emeritus - retired from his career. I suspect (and hope) he'll be around for a long, long time. Phdtobe, I hope you'll be around for many years, to enjoy your Doctorate and your retirement. Oops - I almost said "Terminal Degree ..." :)

I notice that DI bestowed a title on me "Well-Know Member". With that kind of accolades being task around going for the ultimate "terminal" degree Dsctobe is definitely in the cards. Did Steve L. receive a title from DI? I am rooting(sp?) for him.

Yep - rooting is the right spelling. I think the only official title DI gives these days is "Well-known member" and that kicks in around 1,000 posts - and it seems Steve Levicoff has only favoured us with 775 posts so far. (But he holds a real, honest-to-God Ph.D.) There used to be more awards, such as the "Distinguished Senior Moderator" that Ted Heiks was accorded, back in the halcyon days when DI bestowed it. I think these days, "well-known member" and "Moderator" are the complete DI lexicon of honorifics.

There are, of course, some unofficial titles. In a recent thread, a DI moderator awarded the title "a**hole" (using the full uncut version) to a former DI member who hasn't posted to any education fora in about 10 years. A retroactive and somewhat belated honour, I guess. As Pierre Trudeau* said, when Richard Nixon called him an a**hole - he's likely been called worse names by better people.

*Pierre Elliott Trudeau - 15th Prime Minister of Canada - and father of Justin Trudeau, the incumbent Prime Minister.

I think these other awards, beyond "well-known member" and "Moderator" are not automated. Unless I miss my guess, they're hand-rolled, by Special Dispensation of our Leader, Chip. OK - smite me if I'm wrong.

I dunno, but I think that's how I became the Resident Chef, and that didn't change/default when we upgraded the platform.
