In yet another reminder of the disappearing boundaries between education and business, Sylvan Learning Systems is buying 41% of Walden University (and, it is rumored, with an option to buy the rest). Sylvan in turn is a public company; significant minority interests in Sylvan are held by the State Street Bank and T Rowe Price.

The Chronicle of Higher Ed article (http://chronicle.clom/free/2001/02/2001020601u.htm) also reports that Sylvan owns major stakes in four non-US universities, in Mexico (University of the Valley), Spain, Switzerland, and Chile.

I actually think this could be a good thing if tuition prices decline as a result of improved operational efficiencies. Any chance of this (tuition reduction) happening?

haha! I would expect a for-profit company to pocket any savings that are due to efficiency.

I suppose you could expect a few more multiple-choice exams, though. [IMG]

Walden is on my short list of potential schools, the others being Capella and Fielding. Is this purcahse something i should be concerned with other than the possibility of tuition changes?

I don't think so. Of the 20-or-so regionally accredited schools that go out of business each year, there has been no disproportionate number of proprietary ones. Yet there remains the concern that some cost accountant will look at the non-performing brands at Glut-Co, and decide that the prune swirl bars and the university are not up to par, and need to be shut down.
