Thanks, Afterhours, that's the nicest description of "indecisive" I've ever heard!

I am trying to grasp what is the difference between UotC world view position enforcement and other universities' enforcing their world view. I believe most, including UotC, publish openly and explicitly their requirements - including whom they will accept as students and guests.

I having been searching for a doctoral program for some time now. The EdD program at Univeristy of the Cumberlands sounds very intriguing. Since I am a Libery University graduate and a conservative Christian I have no issues with the policy statements discussed here. I would love to hear how the school work is progressing and any other issues you may run into and how you handle them. Thank you for sharing this program.

    Hi Brian!

I'm sure Steve can add to this conversation, but I'll share my experience thus far. My first course was ELSOL 833 - Higher Education in America with Dr. Goff. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had weekly discussion questions and three writing assignments. The first was a 3-5 page "fact sheet" on a university of our choosing that we had no prior relationship with. Essentially we wrote about the history and structure of the school. The second paper was a 5-7 page comparison of two higher education schools or systems. I compared the Virginia Community College System with North Carolina's. It was eye opening. The third paper was a 10-12 pager on the qualities of an effective college president. The papers were due approximately every 2 weeks.

I'm currently in a specialization course, HIOL 531 - Special Topics: Virginia History with Dr. Coleman. I did not need to complete this course, as I had plenty to transfer in. However, when I was inquiring about the program, I asked if I'd be able to do such a course because I had been looking for one in Virginia History. Completing it will help with my teaching an undergrad Virginia History course at my community college. They were more than willing to do a course for me, so I was thrilled at the opportunity. This course involves heavy reading. I'm essentially doing a book per week and writing a professional review of it. It's pretty simply, but time consuming. Still, I'm learning quite a bit.

I've already signed up for my summer courses. I'll be in Learning in Adulthood (which Steve already took) and Online Teaching and Learning, both with Dr. Simpson. I anticipate that I'll definitely stick with the program. Everyone I've talked to has been more than willing to work with me to make sure I'm succeeding. I would definitely recommend you apply!

You'll like Dr. Simpson, Matt -- she's great. Basically my experience is similar so far, I'm in my second course, the first went well and this one is good also.

You can add one more member of DI to those enrolled at UoftC. I start my first class Monday, The Change Effect with Dr. Vann as the instructor. Then for the second part of the term, I'm doing Learning in Adulthood. After those two classes, I'm going to focus on getting my area of specialization courses (Psychology) done because the school at which I teach is chomping at the bit for me to get more psych credits. They find the content of my M.Ed. too nebulous as far as their accreditation needs (HLC) to say that I am good to teach all of the undergrad psych courses that that are offered. I'm looking forward to launching into this.

I'd like to give a shout out to Matt for the time you took and your advice concerning the research interests statement and foundations test. It really helped me with getting into this program.

    question

    Brian et al,

I must say that you have me VERY intrigues about UC's program. With that, I had a question regarding the EdD to PhD program. Do you take two more classes and you are only awarded the PhD in Leadership or do you obtain the EdD and then if you take the two other courses you are also awarded the PhD in Leadership as well? I realize that this may be a silly question but I cannot seem to find clarification... I was considering the EdD at Liberty U but the price of UC is just crazy... It equals up to about half of the cost of Liberty... soooooo again, I am VERY interested...
    Thanks in advance,

    Alex

Only the PhD, Alex. But really, isn't that enough?

So, I just completed my first class session at UoftC... I was concerned at the synchronous aspect, but it turns out that I like the way it's set up. I'd rather have actual discussions with my colleagues over voice/text chat in real time than have to do insipid weekly discussion questions. So, just 479 more class sessions and the dissertation to go.

Holy crap, I meant to type 159 more class sessions... I'm not going for 3 PhDs... ROFL

<Note to self, proofread better, especially when it comes to stuff you have to turn in for credit... Eeesh>

You scared me for a second there!

I think of it in terms of how many pages of writing to go. That's harder for me than the class sessions, which I actually enjoy. I have to sort of rev up to get into academic writing.

Also, I hope you like Dr. Vann. I haven't had him yet for anything, but I know I will sooner or later.

I feel like a used car salesman promoting this school to so many people... except that unlike used cars, the school is actually really nice!

Dr. Vann seems really cool. He did my entry interview. (He's also my academic advisor, but that may be due to the fact that he's the program head, I don't know if everyone gets him for their advisor.) I must say I enjoyed the way he ran the class session; I was a little uneasy going into it not knowing what to expect, but he's got me looking forward to the rest of the class, as well as the rest of my classes.

I'm also looking at U Cumberlands. I have to admit that I wonder how prospective employers would view this uni given the controversies.
