Hi Roscoe - Thanks for the tips. One thing that people may not know is the University of the Western Cape is a South African university that offers a bunch of research oriented degree proprams similar to UNISA or Pretoria, etc. Their website is sparse but they are (small) players in the dissertation-only DL market. You should check them out.

    Hi emmzee,

I believe you are correct. But I don't understand why the price is the same for "all other" masters and doctorates, and the price for the PhD is $3,300. Also, if I'm following this correctly, the price appears to be more than the price at other S. African schools, like Pretoria. Still, it's a good deal compared to the U.S. and other places.

I'm toying with the idea of earning a ThD or MTh in practical theology. At the moment, I'm looking at this school, and UNISA. For various reasons, I'm leaning toward UNISA. I also considered Auckland Park Theological Seminary, but they offer a DLitt et Phil degree, which is too close to the PhD I already have.

UWC is actually one of the cheaper, but not the cheapest, of the universities in SA. It is a proper B&M university, unlike UNISA and also have a long history.
Once again, most masters and doctoral programmes in SA are research based and are based on independent work. This in effect means that most post grad degrees can be done via DL, even if the admissions folk don't realise it.

    Hi Lukeness,

I enjoy reading your posts about schools in SA.

Do you think UWC is simply charging more for international students? It appears that it really is one of the cheaper schools for SA students.

Also, what exactly is the DLitt et Phil degree? Is it the same as a PhD? I saw the cv of a man using it in the U.S. and he noted the degree with "(PhD)" following it.

    Hi Roscoe,

A DLitt et Phil degree is rather unusual here too. It is a doctor of literature and philosophy but is apparently used by some universities as it is a traditionally Afrikaans version of a PhD (I just learned this myself, lol).

It looks like that's the standard pricing, that said it doesn't sound too unreasonable since UWC is a B&M university and I'm not sure if they differentiate between on-campus students and DL students since they are traditionally not a DL university and the fee probably includes the use of their facilities (I'm going on a lot of assumption here so correct me if you find out otherwise, please).

I think the biggest potential university post-graduate bargains are the 'new' (amalgamted colleges, universities and technicons [vocational/technical colleges]) universities and former apartheid 'homeland' universities.

The former homeland universities were, and probably are still, well subsidized as they serve mostly members from 'previously disadvantaged' communities. That said, they have the same accreditation and I imagine would be received the same way as other SA universities would be overseas.

Some of these even have long histories and boast famous alumni, like the University of Fort Hare ( University of Fort Hare - Welcome ) where people like Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Robert Mugabe, Kenneth Kaunda, Chris Hani and other statesmen (good and bad) attended.

Most of these don't officially have DL options, but they could very possibly allow this for thesis only post grad degrees.

    Try these too:
    North-West University - North-West University - Choose your languages
University of Venda - University of Venda
Walter Sisulu University - Welcome to Walter Sisulu University
University of Zululand (which I've seen posted here before) - University of Zululand | "Welcome"

    Thanks, Lukeness!

I really appreciate your insight, and the list of schools.
