AMU, UNITAR POCI Sign Cooperative Degree Agreement

American Military University (AMU), in cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research Programme of Correspondence Instruction (UNITAR POCI), has evaluated the curriculum for UNITAR's Programme of Correspondence Instruction in Peacekeeping Operations and will award graduates credit hours to be applied toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations with a concentration in Peacekeeping from AMU.

    Agreement Overview

Students who successfully complete UNITAR's Correspondence Instruction in Peacekeeping Operation program will be awarded 24 hours of transfer credit to be applied to an AMU bachelor's degree in International Relations (Concentration in Peacekeeping) as indicated.

If students do not complete the entire UNITAR POCI program, but successfully complete individual courses, credit will be granted and applied toward elective credit in any AMU undergraduate program, as indicated.

In some cases UNITAR POCI courses can be combined to award credit toward specific core and major requirements for AMU's B.A. in International Relations.

That's pretty interesting. You may have found the start of the new "FEMA" courses. Hopefully ACE might take a look at the courses and some universities may start accepting them as well. Cool find man! :)

I just thought of something else as well. Does AMU take transfers of TESC associates degrees in the full 60 hours to satisy general education requirements? If so couldn't you take these UNITAR courses combined with the TESC associates degree and end up with 84 credits toward the bachelors degree they offer? I cannot remember AMU's transfer policy.

these courses are really fun. i did one of them some time ago just because i was interested in the subject. if you ask for it they send you also get a nice certificate with the united nations logo. you have to work through about~ 100 pages and answer a mc quizz of 50 questions. 2-4h and you got it :)

I have to say looking through this list they sure do intrigue me. If I can find the time to take a few of the "for credit" courses I'll test the waters with either Bellevue or TESC. Again good find man! :)

I haven't used ACE credits before, but if I take these courses and they are ACE approved can I credit bank them at EC OR TESC?

The only ones I see that are ACE reviewed are :

United Nations Civilian Police: Restoring Order Following Hostilities which is here on the UN Site

I know I'm wrong and that is not the only one because some of the course names are similar but not the same. It looks like a total of 6 hours can be gained by completing the whole thing but like I said the UN Site has way more courses you can take.

I saw all of those on the acenet site but only one corresponds to the correct title. That is the one I linked. I would suggest contacting ACE and seeing if they are in the process of reviewing all of the titles or if they can at least help figure out which ones correspond to the ones on the UNITAR site. :)

I have taken the UNITAR course Global Terrorism and really enjoyed it, as I took 2 courses with DR Medhurst at AMU, Medhurst wrote the course.

No. Thomas Edison State College became so uncooperative on every issue after I switched from credit bank to degree program, that I gave up on trying to get DOCNET credit and credit for other things from an left TESC. I may go back some day and get another year of credit bank service at TESC, but will stay away from the degree program. I really do not need the credit at this point, as I have around 250 accredited semester credits on the undergraduate level, and will probably concentrate on graduate studies in the future. My degree in Criminal Justice at Excelsior has an April 18, 2008 graduating date. I will probably still look at programs that may be of interest such as FEMA courses and DOCNET and pass them on, but do not know many I will use personally in the future. I still have free courses that I will be taking form the Air Force Institute and Marine Corps Institute because I need it for military service, which will give me ACE credit recomendations whether I need them or not. I may add these to my ACE credit bank account in the future when I have a large amount to justify the credit bank expense, and try DOCNET and other unique things at the same time.

Dredging up an old post but I am curious if anyone has been able to match up all these courses to the sites course list. For some reason the titles are off or something. These would be 6 CJ or possibly general elective courses. Anyone?

I don't know, but some of the classes sound fun just to take for the knowledge. I wouldn't need them for a degree but they sound interesting!

I just came across this post again and was curious if anyone had successfully used these credits and where they might apply.

Also note that some items have changed according to the AMU site:

"Students who have successfully completed courses at The Peace Operations Training Institute (POTI), formerly known as UNITAR-POCI, will be awarded up to 22 hours of transfer credit to be applied to an Associate of Arts - General or any Bachelor's Degree program."

The entire set of courses costs a total of $1330.00 USD. Unless I'm misreading the notation they are worth semester hours rather than credit hours.

Also just a note but UNITAR now has their own set of online courses here ---------> http://www.unitar.org/e-learning This is seperate from POTI here -----> http://www.peaceopstraining.org/

I cannot tell if the NEW UNITAR courses would be accepted for credit through AMU/APU but I wonder how FEMA (many courses), UNITAR (??? courses), DOCNET (32 courses), and finally the POTI (22 courses) would fit into one of their programs.

Also here is a link to the articulation agreement with POTI and AMU -----------------> http://www.amu.apus.edu/POTI/POTI.pdf
